...although I really didn't intend to!
After attending an air show "wrap-up" meeting (and having a reputation for bringing a different Mustang to all meetings preceding), our Ground Ops Boss pulled me aside & said "hey, I got this old Mustang in my hangar that I really want to find a good home for..." With three airplanes, 8 cars and numerous motorcycles, he was looking to downsize. I told him I wasn't interested, but agreed to go look anyway.

It's about as "plain-jane basic" as they come... One-owner '66 coupe, 6-cyl AT with (current) black CA plates, no rust aside from pitted & tweeked bumpers, a little ding on the front of the hood and excellent interior etc... The kicker is it has 33,645 original miles and has been impeccably maintained while in storage for the better part of 30 years! His Aunt bought it new in San Carlos and drove it locally for a couple of years before setting it aside. The motor fired right up, idled very smooth and after a couple of passes up & down the taxiway - found the drivetrain and suspension tight and responsive... Tho impressed, I still wasn't too keen, but I said I would try find her a good home. I finally asked how much $$ to which he said; Ah, $1,200 will do...

...Knowing the likes of Neil would kill me if I didn't jump on it - I said "Okay"! TJ and I picked it up this morning and were really happy with the drive home. After call to R&R Classics for new bumpers and a few minor fix-its - we'll have a neat li'l driver to add to the collection!

:)

Looks like a nice little car Tim. Is it Wimbledon White or Arcadian Blue?? Can't tell from the pictures. I used to have a little straight six, '68 coupe, and it was a great car for driving back and forth to work.

I am looking forward to coming up tomorrow to check out your latest aquisition. You now have an even dozen. How high will that number go????

Anyway, looks like you got a really good deal on it. Congratulations!!

...Renee, I don't know what the color is. 'Sort of a grayish bluish... 'Not real pretty, but we've all seen old cars with beautiful paint jobs that are otherwise "shot" mechanically. The beauty of this one is in the opposite...

Neat car car Tim. I remember when I was looking for a car how hard a nice one seemed to find. Now that we have what we want they just seem to find us. The color code should be on the door tag, I am curious about the color too. Marty

Thanks Marty (and Steve),
She was definitely repainted into this color. VIN is 6R07Txxxxxx. Door tag data is hard to read until I strip a little paint away. The original color based on the inside of the trunk was a pale yellow...

All the best stories start out that way!

Congrats Tim. I know anyone here would have snagged it also, regardless of how much space they have or what the significant other would say. I'm probably lucky that those opportunities don't present themselves to me.

Rhonda, I don't know '66s that well, but it appears to be decorative molding that follows the body lines. I've seen it on others as well, but I can't speak to its originality. TJ & I pressure washed the underside, lubed fittings and took turns driving the neighborhood today... What a sweet little car. I kept thinkin' to myself, "Christ! I must be getting old!!" This is somehow more fun than driving an S-code! ...Add to that, Renee showing me pictures of Mustang golf carts! I'm pretty sure it's just a "new car honeymoon" thing, but short of Rob setting me straight again - I'm a little worried! HELP!!

Tim,
Those 6 cil. have got a bad rap. They are delightfuly simple and fun to drive. I still miss our 67 6cil. coupe and the 22mpg. After the HCS is done I am excited to do a 67 6cil convertible that looks like this one for a driver. I am going to add Pony Carburators 1V carb it add 8-10 Hp and 3-4 mpg. By the way the body moldings on your car were not a factory option. Have fun and never let your dust catch you. Marty

Thanks Marty,
Confirming input from You, Jon and the gang are making this a fun little "side order" to our "main course" ;-) My very first Mustang was a '66 "six" that had a tired 289 supplanted before I bought it ($850) in 1976. It was my high school and "race to the firehouse" (volunteer FD) cruising car. I began trading up after a year of "catching dust" from my friends who drove '69 Windsors, Cobra-Jet Torinos, Firebird 400s and big block Mopars... I had another '66 six with a 3-spd a few years later, but didn't enjoy it much (photo below). Pretty paint, but consumed oil (and transmissions) faster than gas w/ having more miles than cubic inches...

How nice now to re-discover the simplicity and practicality of the basic Mustang.
:)
