1968 Oil Filter Gasket

Everyone knows this but it is something that is easily forgotten and bears repeating; make sure the old oil filter gasket is not stuck to the engine before installing the new oil filter!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Pumped out more than two quarts in maybe 15 seconds. What a mess.

Happened to me years back. I had been out of the classic Mustangs for a while and had bought a 68. Forgot to check for the gasket on the old filter when I took it off and installed a new one. When done I fired up the engine and pulled it up the driveway to go for a spin. Luckily I was looking in the rear view mirror as I moved up the drive. Wondered what the black stripe was on the drive and then quickly turned off the ignition when I realized...

To paraphrase Danny Vermin in the movie Johnny Dangerously.... I left the oil filter gasket on once. Once!
You take the old filter off and turn it upside down in the drain pan, assuming the old gasket is with it. You partially fill the new filter, put a little oil on the new gasket and install it. Disaster strikes. I make a habit of wiping off the mating surface on the engine block now so it won't happen again.

I got away with it once. Took off the filter and checked to make sure gasket was still on it. There were Two gaskets on it ! Somehow it didn't blow out. Hey Steve, long time no hear. Gone floating lately?

Sadly, not for the last two years. I had surgeries both summers. Getting old sucks! The group I was going with broke up, but I plan on going this summer, even if solo!

The group I used to go with broke up also. Depending on when you want to go.....If in late july or aug I might like to go with....I'll probably be in AK commercial fishing sockeye till then.
