I don’t know if there was originally padding in the 68’s or not. My 64 does have padding over the gas tank but not over the entire trunk area. I did put some padding in my trunk, just to help with noise reduction.

If I had it to do over, and I still might, I’d go with something even thicker for more padding and insulation. Ssnake-Oyl sells a fuel tank insulation mat for $10 that I like.

There is no pad under the mat. The mat is called "burtex" and is not rubber. Hope this helps.

Hi Russ,

Shouldn't there be sound deadening on top of the gas tank (under the trunk mat) and sound deadening further up below the package tray?

Scott,

You are right about the sound deadener where the upper shock mounts are located on the "hump" in the trunk. I haven't seen any San Jose cars that have the sound deadener over the gas tank, though. It seems that Ford put the sound deadener in the passenger area to try to keep these cars as quiet as possible (unfortunately these Mustangs were still noisy!).

Russ,

I have a 1968 Mustang convertible that has the sound deadening on the tank. It's a San Jose car. Early car though, build date of Feb 1968. My original paint GT/CS doesn't have it on the tank though, but does have it where the upper shock mounts are. Who knows, seems like lots of things on the cars were hit-or-miss.

Brian,
If you are interested, NPD sells exact replacement sound deadener that fits the area in the trunk and throughout the car. It's not too expensive and fits very well. Hope this helps,
Russ
