Interestingly, the magazine states that certain model/engine combination have been left out due to low production and lack of transaction history to establish a price.

I just looked through the last 6 months of Hemmings Motor News and only found 2 68's with a 428. One was a GT fastback asking $52K. The other was a GT coupe asking $179K.

Must be some great deals happening in the auction arena or these guys don't have a clue.

Well, at those prices I would put one in my entry way of my house and then park the rest on my lawn. I live in a somewhat conservative area so I am sure the "Oh my God we have a redneck living in the neighborhood police" would be around quickly. Would make a great picture though.

Old Cars Price Guide prices for April 2006 edition

Here are the prices in the April 2006 edition of Old Cars Price Guide.
These are based on auctions, private sales and expert input.

add 200% for 135 series <== I had never heard of this before. I found some info on the web.
Early Cobra Jet heads are casting # C8AE-J and have 16 bolt holes also in some cases. The earliest CJ Mustangs so called 135 series cars and early 428CJ Cougars had 14 bolt C8AE-J heads.
The great majority of 428CJ cars came with C80E-N heads with 16 bolt holes.

Condition explanation: (excerpts from the magazine, enough to explain the condition. Not my opinion neccessarily)

6= Parts Car

5= Restorable - Needs complete restoration of body, interior, chassis and interior. May or may not be running.

4= Drivable - A driveable vehicle needing no, or only minor work to be functional. Could be a deteriorated or very poor amatuer restoration.

3= Very Good - Completely operable original or older restoration showing wear. Also a good amatuer restoration, all presentable and serviceable inside and out. "20-footer". In general most cars seen at cars shows are #3's

2= Fine - Well restored or a combination of superior restoration and excellent original. Also, an extermely well maintained original showing very minimal wear.

1= Excellent - Restored to current maximum professional standards of quality in every area or perfect original with components operating or appearing as new. A 95+ point show car that is not driven. In national show judging, a car in #1 condition is likely to win top honors in it's class. "In a sense, it has ceased to be an automobile and has become an object of art."


(I had to add that last part because it sounds good. But isn't this true of all our cars to some extent?)

I didn't think a CS would have been a 135. But wasn't sure.
I just never heard of it before and was curious about it.
They listed that, as well as the CS percentage increase all under the 68 Mustangs. It wasn't listed under the CS specifically.

Refreshing an old thread.

Hemmings Muscle Machines Magazine, August 2007, just came out with their latest Ford/Mercury/Shelby price guides.

Again they have the price of the 1968 428's way out of whack (probably the 390's also...4-5K price difference between a 302 and a 390 on the high end??).

I don't think it is a hardtop vs fastback issue as they have the 1968 GT 428 hardtop valued at 39,500 and the 1968 GT Fastback 428 valued at 53,500.

Very Interesting.

As the original owner of my CS, I find it very interesting that most price guides have our Mustangs doing very well. IMO I think this trend is going to continue for the CS, now that people are realizing how unique and rare our cars are. It wasn't too many years ago that most people didn't even know what a California Special Mustang was.

By the way, the top price listed for my CS is about 10 times what I paid for it new, and alot less than I have been offered for it in the last 10 years.

I look at it this way. Price guides are just that, a price guide. A starting point for those who really don't know. Heck, my insurance company has my CS insured for an agreed upon value of $65,000 without an appraisel. I thought that was pretty good. They sent their own folks out to look at the car and take some photo's so I figure they know what their doing.
