Hi,

Been a while since Ive logged on. I quess I better mail my marti report to Paul for the new registry.

Had a quick question. I am replacing rear wheel bearings and seals on the 9". Siphoned as much fluid as possible from 3rd member casing. Do I just fill it with 90 weight up to the top of the filler hole/plug?

thanks

You may want to consider this. Jack up one side of the axle housing so that it is tilted as much as possible to drain out all possible 90 wt. gear oil. Then replace with Mobil 1 synthetic gear oil. I find it far superior, does not foam, and stays put on the ring and pinnion very well during periods of not driving. I do not think there is a problem mixing old 90 wt. with synthetic, but have never done it . I always drain and refill with Mobile 1 when ever it is time to service real axle. Just my two cents worth - use your own judgement. Murf

Good time to bring this question up again. Anybody know what this hole on my 9" is for? I put a rubber plug in it to keep stuff out. I just don't want to leave it open when it goes back into my car. Does anybody else with 9" rears have this hole?
At worst I can always have it welded up but the hole looks to clean to have been drilled after the fact. ??? ???
Thanks
Bill

I just purchased a 9" housing from Currie Enterprises that is supposed to be made to original specs. It doesn't have this hole.

I may be way out in left field but I know in the Jeep world (I'm a Jeeper, my only non Ford on the lot) they put in air lockers and there is an air line that goes in to the locker so you can activate it from the cab. Could it have been used for something in 4x4 arena and possibly had lockers at one time? Just brain storming as I find it curious that it would have an exposed hole myself.

I had decided that the post with the duct tape on it was the vent. As far as I know it came out of a 1972 Mustang and appeared to be original, still with tag and all.

The post with the duct tape is your vent tube. As for the other hole, no idea. My 9" doesn't have anything like that. Maybe something added to the 72 rear ends.
