I am soon to register my car but am not sure of how the rear lights are supposed to work in oz, particularly vic. At present the indicators are the small round ones bellow the tail lights. Tail lights work when lights are on and also work as brake lights. I dont seem to have any reversing lights. Thanks for any info you can give me.

The way I'm reading your description, it sounds like the turn signal circuit is wired to the Back-up lights. The back-up lights should only come on when the gear selector is in reverse.
Do you have a wiring diagram? Something is definitely crossed up. The turn signal should be going to the bright element in the dual element tail/brake light bulbs (#1157).

Sorry but I don't have a wiring diagram. It seems some time , someone has placed the indicaters where the reversing lights once were. The lenses on my indicators are amber.

If I am understanding your description, the back-up lights on the rear valance have amber lenses and function as the turn signal lights, and the rear tail lights function as the tail lights & brake lights only. Is this correct?
Let me know if I am understanding your description correctly. I am not familiar with lighting requirements in your country, so you'll have to let me know the legal requirements.
FYI- gt bandit in Perth has wiring diagrams. I sent them to him a couple months ago.

Vman,
Wow, just when you think you have heard it all. This one put a smile on my face!

I have never been to the land of oz and who knows how they set up cars down there. This may be how they did it. Dumb question, is this car right hand drive??

If we were in America, this would more than likely been a home grown job. I say more than likely from the best of my knowledge and knowing the factory did some weird stuff. One way to start is to follow the wire coming up from the transmission. Is it auto or manual trans?? The backup light “switch” is contained in housing bolted to the side of an auto trans right where the shift lever attaches to the transmission. A manual one is kinda hanging off the back of the shift linkage and has a button the reverse gear linkage arm activates. In either case see if there is a bundle of wires that goes forward and up the firewall on the engine side to a four prong plug near the back of the left valve cover on the firewall. This is the source to power the backup lights and works as a neutral lockout for an automatic car. My guess is if this is “home grown” you will see some evidence of non-stock wiring in this area. If not then you can follow the wire through the firewall to under the dash and check under there for some non-stock attachments or soldering.

My favorite thing to do in my old age is to remove the driver seat to inspect under the dash. Only 4 nuts and it will save you a sore back and a case of Fosters!!!

Amber lenses??? Do they have a Ford stamp in the lens?? If not that would be a telltale sign. If it has a Ford script, and you see no non-stock hookups, this may be how they did it in the land down under!!! What is a “vegamiten” sandwich??

NOW, after 33 years of ownership... you tell me about the seat removal....at 6'3" I've had my share of contortions....repair and "otherwise"....LOL!!

Vegimite is a lot like peanut butter--but with a Teriyaki aftertaste....it's an aquired taste... it's mostly used on breakfast toast.

In a sort of related note, I wonder what "Falcon", or "Falcon GT" parts would fit on a '68 Mustang.

As for a Cs taillight wiring diagram, the one I did is floating here somewhere---I'm sure someone can find the URL for you.

The website listed above is GREAT for folks that don't have wiring diagrams. It actuall prints out more clearly than the screen display - except it cuts off the right hand side of the drawing.
Paul- re: your query about Falcon parts for Mustangs - if you have a '65/66 Mustang you're in luck. In those years, Mustangs were basically on a Falcon chassis. In '67 & 68 Mustangs became their own entity.
Whenever an owner of a '65/66 touts their cars as being the true collectibles, you can GENTLY remind them they own/drive a rebodied Falcon. DO THIS FROM A SAFE DISTANCE. Sometimes truth DOES hurt!!

Yes the lights in the valance are ford lenses and are amber and are the indicator lights. The number stamped on them is sae r 64cr.Don't know if this makes any sense. As for the car, it has been converted to right hand drive with the use of a 69 falcon steering box. It seems mine was one of the cheaper conversions due to the fact that a good conversion , they would reverse the firewall and mine has not been done that way. Also forgot to mention that it is an auto. I will make an effort to crawl under the car and chase up any wires leading from the auto.
On a final note. I love my vegimite and you guys should try some one day.

vman- a great looking car.
Question: Do autos in your country use amber lights on the rear as turn signal indicators? If so, you may have to keep the present configuration.
Or is it permissable, and do you wish to put the lighting back to original Mustang specifications?
The amber units resemble the front turn signal lights on the '65/66 Mustangs. If you can & wish to convert to '68 Mustang specs, the back-up lights, lenses, gaskets are available new and/or used, and are not terribly expensive. But first you need to establish the legal requirements for Oz. Your car looks great in its present configuration. It comes down to legal requirements in your country, and if you want to change the current set-up. It is do-able if you choose.

Hi Neil,
I meant the Australian Falcon GTs....one version being the Mad Max (Interceptor) car. They look kind of like U.S. Torinos. Falcon GTs were around (my guess) from 1967-73 in OZ...

Not long after posting my last post, a 67 mustang drove past while I was out walking my dog. It had the same amber lights in the valance and the other lights were as per normal. I tried to follow it but a 40 year old car is faster than a 42 year old man.
Thanks for the comments on my car. It is appreciated.I think I will try and find out what our state legal requirements are.
As far as autos go, they have standard white reversing lenses.
Incedently, talking about the mad max film. part of it was filmed just outside the town I live in. The scene where Max gives the guy the option of sawing off his wrist or through the leaf spring on his car. Once I get my car on the road I will take a photo of my car out there.

Someone not far from me has a yellow Australian Falcon and a Mad Max Interceptor from Australia.

Here are a few pics of the Interceptor at our car clubs show in July

LOL!!

That is, Back up lights? I find it interesting about how we have different names for the same parts--like Bonnet, spanner wrench, petrol, etc...
Sometime you should explain to members here what a "UTE" is. We could all use one to go get parts at the swap meet...er...auto jumble (by the way...ever find any Lucas Lights out at those events??)

Oh, thats way cool! You ought to get a scary rubber hand and handcuff it to your leaf spring for the photos! Every car out there needs a hack saw, I guess. LOL!! :) I heard that "in real life" that Ray Batty (head maniac) guy is a pretty nice guy.

How I'd love to see OZ someday (that is, the non-Mad Max version...LOL!!)

Paul N.

Rich--thanks for the cool photos!!! Pretty nasty Falcon there...with that "Monza" nose..(right?).

You know, I've always wondered if the '71-3 Mach 1 hood would bolt right on or if there was a difference in dimensions (No Paul, not Twilight Zone type dimensions).
