I picked up a c4 from a guy in Bellevue for a $100, that was replacing it with a 4 speed in his '34 ford. He didn't know the mileage, but guaranteed it to work good or he'd make it right. With the correct block plate. It also came with a Lokar cable, Don't know if it will have the right length until I put it in. It is even a '68 and the vin # is a 148xxx and my car is a 149xxx. Thought that was pretty cool. I'm going to drop the pan and replace the filter and put in a shift kit.

I'm debating whether to install the trans on the engine out of the car and install both together at once or do them separately. decisions ,decisions.

Bret I have done it both ways. It is much easier out of the car and not much harder to install both at the same time. Marty

Yeh, I think I'll do it separately, only because I'm limited on height. 9' ceiling in the garage and car on ramps and jack stands. Not even sure I'll have enough room to lift the engine out with it on ramps. It'll be close. The challenges of being a shade tree mechanic, gotta love it. Makes you think several steps ahead.

If you do it separately you will need one of these. Lobo

9' ceiling should be fine and it's easier to do with the engine out of the car. Good luck either way.

I do it with a 9 foot ceiling. I use a cherry picker lift, lots of room. Marty

Ditto that, but we opted to pull the car up on ramps to allow greater access to mounts, linkage, exhaust, drive shaft, etc... and you probably couldn't be more "shade tree" than my son & I ;-)

Tim,
Those are GREAT pics! Does T.J. ever wear shoes? My son is a barefoot guy all the time!

Brett,
9 foot is plenty. Intstall them together! Always stand the C4 on its tailshaft to install the torque convertor. The last engagement into the tranny for the convertor is the front pump drive. With a gravity assist it drops in very easily and make sure your fingers are not behind it if it is a full diameter stock convertor. You will only do it once!!!

Well unless you are Rob and like pain....

When the tranny is bolted to the engine the convertor will actually need to be drawn forward about 1/4 of an inch.

Also make sure you align the convertor drain plug with the proper opening in the flex plate!! Why do I say that... hmmmm... Yup, screwed that up before also....

Wow a close VIN to uyour car. What a find!!!

Tim I can't think of a better way to spend your day than working on a car with your son. And in your case night too! Wish we lived closer. Marty
