1968 Battery tray apron rust repair

Hi all. I'm back after a bit of a break. I'm doing the same repair now on my Fairlane. I can tell you that you want to make sure you cut out enough of the old metal. It may appear solid, but will vaporize when you touch a welder to it if you don't cut far enough. Give yourself a couple of inches...

    1968 Bonnie and Clyde lives!!

Glad you got it working. As a personal observation, for anyone else starting a new engine, I recommend starting it with the radiator cap off. When you add coolant to a new engine, it tends to trap air in pockets at the top of the engine. The trapped air can keep the water from circulating...

    For Sale Clone or Repaint?

He needs to learn how to read an odometer. It's 105,700 miles (at least), not 57,000. Other than that, I like the colors too. Steve

    1968 Changing carb

For "seat of the pants" I'll say that once long ago I had an R code (HO) '72 Mach 1. I was broke and going to school, commuting long distance, and needed to save money, so I disconnected and tied shut the secondaries. One night coming home I came across a guy that wanted to race on a country...

    1968 289 vs. 302 block

If it's not going to be numbers matching, use a mid 80's and up roller rocker 302 motor, stroked to 347cu in., forged pistons, about 8.0/1, fuel injection with big throttle body and a supercharger running 6 psi of boost, long tube headers with an X pipe. Steve (filling in for brother Rob)

    1968 Brake wiring

It's grounded on the center taillight panel support, where the fuel filler tube goes through to the gas tank. Steve

    1968 Idiot light

I guess the next place I'd look is the plugs at the instrument cluster. Maybe they forgot to put a wire back, put it in the wrong place, or sometimes the wire will back out of the receptacle if it's been messed with and the little keeper has been flattened out. If nothing else, check the voltage...

    1968 Idiot light

Tach equipted car, got it. I thought about this more as I was out doing yard work, and an indicator light would be fed by the ignition switch, not the voltage regulator or constant voltage unit. It would have 12.6 V on the terminal with a fully charged battery, engine not running. I had just...

    1968 Idiot light

That's how an idiot light would normally work, but I'm surprised you have one instead of a gauge. Is your block grounded to the body or battery? Did you use Teflon tape or pipe sealant on the sender? Both will keep the sender from grounding. Did you use an idiot light specific sender or the one...

1968 Do you remember your first?

The first one I saw was at an apartment in 1975. I found the owner and started a conversation. That guy and I are still friends to this day. Steve

1968 HELP! Car suddenly running bad.

All excellent suggestions. If it hadn't been for the comment about not changing anything in months, I would also suggest checking your vacuum line routing to the distributor. If the lines from the intake and carb are reversed on the ports in the thermostat housing cover, it will do this. Steve
