I remember that article very well. I purchased the magazine because I had just aquired my California Special; and was restoring it. The original color was (and has been re-painted) Wimbleton white. I was really impressed with the color of the car in the article, and contemplated having mine repainted the same color. Anyway, the car in the article was (and still is) beautiful. The young lady pictured is a dead ringer for my wife !

Yes Missy , you just go get in line now.......

That's funny, I had a few people actually ask me to sign the magazine back then. I'm like...huh? Me??? Hahahahaaaaaa!

...Funny, but whenever I announce airshows or run the steam loco at historic events, I would get the same thing. People would bring up t-shirts I designed or programs w/ artwork and ask for my autograph. My stock answer was along the same lines DD..." uh, that and a buck.39 might get you a cup of coffee..." Then a warbird pilot having seen this approached me with a rather stern lecture:

He said "you know... everyone is looking to identify w/ someone who's significant and made a difference ie; to take home a permanent connection with written approval from the one who did it... I wish you could've seen the look on that kids face when you de-valued the whole message with a remark like that..." "Even tho you don't see yourself as a hero - BE the hero for that moment and send that person away with a smile and feeling warmly as part of it!!"...

'Made me think twice. From then on - I proudly sign and thank them for the asking :)

That's an impressive article DD. If I find a copy, will you sign??

Hahahaaa Tim, I'd be proud to!!
That warbird pilot had a valid point and I think about that too. I can't believe the reaction I still get when I take my work truck to public relations events and women's conferences. I am just floored by the reaction and autograph seekers. What really makes me proud is when I have inspired someone to go ahead with their dream because I gave them the confidence to run with it. I have Career Day coming up at a local high school and that should be fun.
It's just that I have done what I do for so long that it is regular old hat for me...then I start thinking about it...I have no idea how I broke the barriers that I did.
It's easy to remember how long I have been a truck driver because I started the same year I bought my CS!
As we say on the CB radio...."Thanks for the flowers!" (Compliments)

...Yeager, Anderson (and Carroll Shelby) did it, without knowing or caring much about it (fame) at the time. They just got caught in the act of doing what they do by an admiring public :)

Hmm... 'Never did a sketch of a lady-driven big rig... 'Wonder if I can now add DD to my wall of fame ;-)

Two related memories:

1. In Junior HS we had a substitute teacher for Music one day. Well you know how much us kids respected subs and for music no less! Well this sub was an older gentleman, much older than any other teacher at our school.
Well this guy floored us ... teaching us things, playing things on the piano etc ... one kid at the end of class asked if he could have his autograph. No one laughed ... there was a line of us ... everyone of us got his autograph. Today I wonder what that meant to that man. If I recall his name was Mr Dworkin, and I remember he signed my paper and made a fancy music staff and G clef on it.

2. This one is funny. In High School, some retired NY Giants, Yankees and Mets players would come and play a charity basketball game against our teachers. Some of us from the Senior class played a preliminary game against the local Police Department. So after our game we showered and then came back into the gym after. We had these young kids running up to us with their game programs asking for autographs. They thought we were some of the retired pros ... not exactly the same ... but was funny at the time ... we pointed them to the real stars.

Being an inspiration to others in the positive sense is what it's all about. I think it's great to pass along life's experiences. For those who "break the mold" so to speak and show others that they can do this too, is a great gift to share.

There is a management booked called, "Fish!" which is about the world-famous fish store at Pikes Place Market, in Seattle. One of the points the author stresses is to make your customer's day. The same goes for life in general. When we are out and about we should do our best to make someone's day. The easiest way is to drive our cars because when people see a real California Special they point and jump up and down and get all goofy so we either made their day or ran over their foot.
