I am going to be driving through Colorado on I76 and I70 on my way to California the end of this month. Any winter road travel advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Keith

You can check Colorado hiway (CDOT) conditions at www.cotrip.org. On the left side of that website, click on cameras, and you can see pics of what ever hiway.

On I70, west of the Eisenhower tunnel, (west of Denver) you will be headed for Vail pass at 10,666 feet. It doesn't take much for CDOT to close I70 at the tunnel. But CDOT usually does a good job of letting drivers know about closures. If you see closure signs it's best to stop & get a room. If you keep going to the closure point, you probably won't get a room. (Speaking from experience.)

Good luck & enjoy the Colorado scenery !

Vail pass can get nasty as well as Glenwood canyon. Best advice is go slow, use the trans to slow, and dont ride your brakes unless you plan on replacing them ...quickly. right now it's just super frigid cold out(12 degrees out right now) BUT we haven't had snow in a couple days so I 70 should be pretty clear

If the DOT closes I70, is it completely shut down or are you allowed to travel if you are chained up?

If you chain up please don't do this.

Keep your eye on the weather forecast. You have two really good mountain ranges to get over!

Thanks for all the info. I guess I will wait and see what the weather brings. Hopefully it stays clear.

Ya unfortunately for that, Colorado weather changes so fast, it's never an easy prediction... It can be a blizzard one minute ,and than sunny outside the next, (fellas and ladies that live here know exactly what i'm saying!)

It's not called "colorful Colorado" for nothing! Just be safe driving, and use your best judgment, people that have lived here and driven these roads all their lives still forget how unruly it can get
