Looking for the most reliable book for info on original items for these GT/CS cars. I realize the registry is out there but other than that what should I purchase to find out what was the original type air breather for lets say a 390 x motor. would it be a chrome air cleaner or a blue snorkel one, those are the things I would like to know, by the way which air cleaner would it be Chuck

The only true source for GT/CS and HCS is Paul's registry books.

That said, the GT/CS was an external 'cosmetic' package only and most items on the GT/CS are standard 68 Mustang. This is especially true for the engine and interior - there is nothing different about the engine, drivetrain or interior between the GT/CS and the 68 mustang. So, the 390 engine package would be the same for the GT/CS as for any other mustang. Therefore, any mustang book or site that has correct engine detailing descriptions would be correct. Casey

Chuck;
Take a look at the following site:

http://mustangsandmore.50megs.com/Pages/Bookstore.html

It lists many of the most current books on the market for older mustangs. You can also try and find a copy of the 1968 GT 390 Mustang World Registry published by Guy Ramsey (2002). Unfortunately his site is no longer on the web. This book gives excellent details for engine parts and restoration tips including part #'s. There were several Mustang restoration shops on the West Coast which did at one time carry Guy's book. You can also watch ebay from time to time. As Casey stated earlier, the GT 390 and GT/CS engine set up is the same for both "S" code and "X" code. I have attached a photo of the engine in my 68 GT 390 which kept factory stock. Hope this info helps.

Don ;)

Don, did you add the chrome air cleaner top, or is it stock? Casey

Casey;
Jason is correct. The chrome lid is from the factory. Watch very closely though between 67 and 68 390 lids. The 67 lid has pleats were as the 68 is smooth. Many folks get the two confused. Also, the 67 air cleaner bucket is different also.
Jason, have you found a new lid for yours yet?

Jason;
Good deal. I know sometimes they are hard to find at a decent price. I've seen some at local swap meets and folks want an arm and a leg for them.
