1968 color of under carriage

For 68 San Jose the color is a slightly shinny (from the epoxy primer sealer product being used at the time) red oxide. The exact color would be somewhere from a darker muddy brown to a pale chalky red oxide from original examples. If you want to get more exact post when the car was completed at San Jose and we can compare other cars from the same period

Speaking of under carriage shots... I saved these from an eBay ad last year. They were from a very clean '68 convertible. I kept meaning to post and see if anyone had any comments about how accurate they are.

WOW !!! IMHO do not copy these if your looking to reproduce the look of a San Jose 68 car (convertible, coupe or fastback) the pattern of spray undercoating around all the seams and panels was not something that was done at the plant not typical of what was done at dealerships.

Sorry you asked

This is not an example of a restored car (though pretty and clean) but something else and of course we don't know if it was being described as a correctly restored car. But if we're using this, from the angle of learning from it let me continue.

The lack of factory detail is what way below what would be expected today at a show. Notice the painted over floor pan plugs (as well as mounting screws) wrong hardware in a number of places. Incorrect paint marks (really love that "325" on the bottom of the rearend housing) , cast blast rear springs, U joints, black spring clamps, dichromate rear shock hardware, lack of body overspray on the floor pans, or pinch weld back out, bottom of the gas tank is painted????? ......... on and on

How about these. Three completely different shades of red oxide. I think the one on the right is original.

Jeff, which overspray pattern is the most correct?

Can I have "none of the above" ??? ;)

None of those are original cars - all have been repainted.

Pic #1 - Only pinch weld overspray - no body color

Pic #2 - Only body color - no pinch weld black overspray

Pic #3 - Like #1 - And no its been repainted. Notice no drips on the ribs of the floor, the color is too flat for original (in most cases) and the dolly marks are missing. Just three things (there are many more) that give it away

We expect to see overspray from the body color (most of the time there was a fair amount since they were trying to make sure those rockers got painted) and then overspray from the pinch weld blackout. Small gun, slightly different angle and amount of air pressure so it did not travel as much.

Don't look like any of those examples have all of the features we would see in an original

I vote for #1 !! (appearance wise) Clean, crisp, good color. To me, there is a difference between 'restore' versus 'duplicate'. Just MHO :)

Jeff, did all the cars, regardless of color, get the pinch welds painted black? I was under the impression the darker cars did not get the black pinch welds. If the darker cars did not, what colors fall into the "DARK" colors. Would the Highland Green and Royal Maroon cars have black pinch welds? Thanks. Mike

I am interested also to hear what Jeff has to say on the pinch weld paint subject. I would like to see the wording dark cars changed to all cars. I have seen black cars that were done. I don't think that guy on the line really cared he shot them all rather than figure witch should and witch should not. Marty

Judging organizations for years have basically required that all cars, except dark colored cars, should have the pinch welds blacked out and its been left at that. At the same time (as we see more original cars) I've grown to accept that even dark colors were done and we can discuss if the worker took a break when black cars were came past his station ;)

To that end my current project (well last two years) is a Jade Black car and we put the detail on that car - because I believe that is correct. If the collective experiences of the head judges are the same you may find movement in the next year or so. Not sure if we will move to all but with documentation some movement IMHO is possible

Did that sound too much like a politician LOL

Boy, I sure hope so Marty. That's one of the details I corrected on mine when I first got it. That seems to be a fairly common omission when they're repainted.
