Folks,

Here's a pretty decent-looking 68 GT/CS on Ebay:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/e...50195600894&ssPageName=ADME:B:WNA:MOTORS:1123

Just as an exercise in CS recognition, I'd be interested in what people think about the correctness/authenticy of this car. I don't doubt it's a CS, but I think some things are suspicious/wrong in it's restoration/presentation. For instance:

1) Supposed to have a deluxe interior, but the doors aren't right (no pull strap, light/speaker grilles appear to just be bolted on normal doors, no woodgrain on dash, etc.). 2K is standard interior, so he's either mislead or mistaken.

2) Taillights have black accent paint, s/b all chrome IIRC.

3) Grill looks to be wrong color (s/b black), and the Lucas spacers s/b black to, I believe.

Anything else? I'm not out to impugn this guy or his car - looks pretty good, actually, and I might bite if I didn't already have a great CS (Gulfstream Aqua is one of my favorite colors ). Just looking to exercise the collective expertise on this site to help future buyers/restorers, etc.

Original was all chrome but Ford replacements and after markets are black. This can be removed but most people leave the black from what I have seen. Myself included but someday will probably remove it.

The grill is correct. It should not be black nor should the Lucas spacers.
Not a great picture of either here but looks like the correct color to me.

On the other hand, the scoop screen is black and should be more of a silver or bare metal color.

It looks like deluxe interior was added afterwards. It's not listed on the Marti but it is stated that it's a "factory deluxe interior" which is a little misleading.

Same with the exhaust. It states factory correct exhaust - but this car did not come with a dual exhaust since it's a 289 and had to be at least a 302 to have dual exhaust. Factory correct doesn't mean it came from the factory though.

Nice looking car overall.

Should it have a 24 inch radiator with factory air conditioning?

This car has been on and off of Ebay for about the last 3 months. I actually looked at this car before buying mine. Overall a nice looking car. I offered the guy $15k but he wanted to hold out for $18k. Not sure where he stands today. He wasn't real excited when I said I wanted to have it checked out before buying.

I ended up buying a car that I will have at least $18k invested in by the time I have it complete but at least I know the engine/transmission is sound and I have new paint,tires,wheels,interior,etc...

It's also on Craigslist

http://dallas.craigslist.org/dal/ctd/1152150002.html

The foglight posts look too light but they may just be faded or the sunlight may be reflecting off them.

The radio knobs are incorrect

Definitely has the wrong radiator. It will probably run hot with the AC on.

On the plus side, the side scoop has a great witness line

The underside of the trunk lid looks a little too raw-fiberglassy for me.

The scoop screen rivets are in the wrong place

The foglight switch may be too far towards the steering wheel.

Nice looking, appears to be in Good condition.
Definitely not Deluxe interior: Marti report even states standard The only Deluxe interior components in the photos are the door grilles (no lights/speakers) and the steering wheel (no woodgrain insert). Vinyl top not listed as factory option, but does look nice. Dual exhaust & GT valance added (I did that to mine also) aftermarket.
Factory A/C should have larger radiator & correct hold-down bracket.
Nice car for the right price ($15K tops, if everything ck's out OK)

Pretty sure that the radio is of a later year, and has longer shafts. I have a later model AM/FM to install in my 1969 Cougar, and it has a balance slider bar under the bezel and above the push buttons. I want to say that I can almost make it out in the picture on ebay.

Could this be a radio and/or radio knobs used for cars with a console?

Hey everyone

I like this car. I am thinking of making an offer. If anyone has seen this car in person, could you let me know what you think?

Is it worth 17k. ?

Thanks in advance

Hey Brett,

I looked at this car a few months back when I was searching for a car. I'm no expert but the car seems solid. No rust, no signs of any serious accidents (again, I'm no expert!), interior looks good, exterior looks good, paint is fairly bright. The only thing I would be careful of is that I don't think the car has been regularly driven and I would be suprised if any regular maintenance has been performed on the car. I would hire a professional to check it out before buying.

I did notice that the brakes seemed a little spongy although they are drums so I may just not be used to non-disc brakes.

Hope this helps...

Thanks Greg

Thanks alot, i really appreciate your reply.. Any idea as to a value? I know its tough, but i was thinking approx.. 17k.

Did you drive it? Did it seem to run ok? Did the air work?

Do you happen to know if it is numbers matching?

Thanks

I only drove it around the parking lot. The engine started right up but it seemed to have a bit of burnt oil smell. I don't want to make a call on whether it was burning any oil...I would just have it proefessionally checked out. The brakes were spongy.

I didn't try the air but I seemed to remember the guy saying it didn't work but all the pieces were there. Some others on this site have said that the radiator is too small for an AC car.

I don't know if it is numbers matching but there was nothing about the car that would lead me to believe that it wasn't (no major body work or engine work was apparent).

I actually offered $15k and when he didn't take it I walked away. I have seen it listed on Craigslist with a price of $23,000. He gave me the impression that he thought $18,000 could buy it. The seller isn't the owner - he has a guy selling it for him.

If a professional checked it out and there were no major issues I think $17,000 is a fair price. My concern was getting the car and finding out it needed $3000-$5000 in engine/transmission/brake/suspension, etc. work and then having $20,000+ tied up in the car.

Bottom line is it is a nice/non-abused car but it seems to have been sitting around for some time and we all know what non-use does to these old cars...

Thanks

I just heard back from the guy, Brent is his name. He wont take any less than $18500, which is more like 21,000 Canadian. It would be hard to justify that kind of money especially since i would still need to get it up here. I would probably have 23 to 24 k. into it by the time i got her home.

So at this time we are $1500.00 apart which is enough for me to have to pass .

Thanks for your help, greatly appreciated.

Oh and by the way he said the air blows cold, for anyone interested..
