Just some photos of the driveshaft paint stripes on my '68 HCS as I'm cleaning it off. My green and pink stripes look pretty wide and smeared compared to some of the other photos I've seen people post. And then the big smeared, overlapping mess of colors in photo 3.

Will you be restoring back to this or are your plans something else? Have you measured the distance between strips and how far down the driveshaft paint starts?

I'm admittedly being weird about the restoration question. I definitely am not going for concours and don't ever plan to attend shows where the car is judged for points.

But I do like the idea of preserving the history. So I think on the driveshaft I will soak it to get rid of the rust and then see how it looks. I might just leave the current markings (rather than try to replicate them with new stripes) and then maybe clear coat it? Stupid idea?

I soak the rust off with Evaprorust in a 4-inch PVC tube. It has been my experience the paint comes off with the rust. If you do not replicate the strips exactly it is no big deal, no two were the same in the factory anyway.
