GT/CS on eBay

The VIN on this car seems too low to be a GT/CS. Do we kow the VIN for GT/CS #1?

It's also an interesting color combination. Has anyone seen this combination before?

Also seems to have a standard grill.

too early to be a CS. 116xxx is the first one in the register and only one at this #

all the others start at 120xxx

CS's were 68 1/2 models so that have higher VIN #'s

How many GTCS's came with that style of rear quarter reflector?...mine has the chrome bezel and its external..this one is flushed in...Mine was built March 1, 1968...does the time of the year determine which style of reflector?

The guy who is selling this car seems to believe he has a real california special. I am sure everyone is questioning him about the car, but he claims he has no knowledge if it is real or not.

I asked him the following question:

"Hello, I have a couple questions...(1) Do you have Original Documentation or a report from Marti or Ford to autheniticate this is a True California Special? (2) or Is this a CLONE? THANKS"

His response:

"hi, no marti report, i bought car believing it is real. kevin 317-535-1528 thanks"

I noticed that someone has been trying to contact him by phone but the guy is not available to talk about the car in person. If he bought it believing it was real, then why is he selling it? Maybe he did some research on California Special.com and decided to unload his "1968 FORD MUSTANG RARE CALIFORNIA SPECIAL NOT SHELBY" So you go figure. If your not sure about your car, and you have no documentation, then why not spend a few bucks and find out from Marti? It would be nice if he would put some sort of disclaimer up unless the car has been verified. Who knows...this may be a rare prototype?? The mystery goes on...

He has a dislclaimer up now, odd thing is the car looks right? I didn't spend a lot of time looking it over but what few pictures I looked at looked good.

David, Paul talks about this in his book. Sometime around mid-Feb the rear reflectors changed from flush color coded, to the chrome style. I believe this had to do with parts change overs due to the 67 union strike. My CS is a Feb 23 built car, and has the chrome rear reflectors. Casey

If this is such an early model, then why does it have Lucas and not Marchal fog lamps. I guess the car could have been hit, grill damaged, lamps stolen, etc.... ???

The VIN Decoder puts the 15J as Sept 15, 1967. That doesnt make sense. If I remember from Paul's book, the California Special script was barely ready for production cars beginning sometime in Dec/Jan (ie, the script wasnt even on the cars shown at the hotel in LA or San Fran). Maybe I got the date code wrong...Casey

Isn't there a mounting tab in the grill in this picture? Or is that something else I see on the right side of the photo?

... Or maybe the owner obeyed the Ford recall and had his Marchals replaced by Lucas fog lamps.

Now the VIN decoder issue showing an early build date, and comparing it to the later manufacturing date for the CS emblem, hmmm..., could a car be built a little earlier and then somehow be released from the plant later due to a planned or unplanned event(s) ???

Yeah, I think a Marti Report is warranted ;) ...

That looks like it has a regular grill on it, and no pedistals on those foglights. The grill is missing the Marchall Mounts and it looks like a bracket attached to the grill for a chrome emblem/corral. Someone may have put this one together from a wrecked GT/CS and added the lucas lights.

This guy sells a lot of NOS and refurbished mustang / shelby parts on eBay. He knows his mustangs..he's just playing ignorance by claiming it could possibly be a prototype. I explained to him yesterday that it could possibly be a prototype if it had a late december date code, but this guys is not stupid, he knows how to decode...then he posts a disclaimer to pass it off on the buyer to do the research giving them false hopes that this September built car is possibly a prototype. This is seems to be a pot of gold hype sale.

I ordered a MArti report for this car and it IS NOT a california special. I notified the seller and he refuses to respond or update his post. I called him on his phone number thinking he might not be checking his e-mail, then he started swearing and getting defensive. From the impression I've got, he knew it wasn't real from the start and had tried to defraud bidders.

Are you going to contact eBay and report him? If you don't want to do that I'll be happy to if you send me a copy of the report.

I don't know if ebay will do anything about it because he did post that he wasn't sure if it was real. He is doing wrong by inferring it might be a prototype or maybe a real GT/CS. I did e-mail all the bidders and let them know. If I bought this car and later found out about this BS, he would be buying the car back plus paying me for all the crap I had to go through.

I was tempted to email the bidders too but couldn't figure out how to do it. How do you do that?
