I'm looking at a '68 HCS to buy. It looks pretty decent, but one of the torque boxes is pretty well gone. Having never done this job before, what am I letting myself in for? Doable, or should I take a pass?

As badly rusted as that is I'd be surprised if there wasn't a lot more rust hidden inside and underneath.

Neil the torque box in its self is not that bad but as Arlie said usully there are other things as well. Usully when I see a torque box that is that bad I would assume that it either had AC and the box leaked or worse the cowl leaks. I would not buy one without testing the cowl. Look at my web site and you can see what is involved with both repairs. http://68hcs.weebly.com

This is a non A/C car. The owner says the cowls don't leak. The car was incorrectly restored as a C/S rather than a HCS (Marti shows DSO 51) and the VIN is listed in the old registry. I'd have to look at this car 'up close & personal' to see if my 70 year old body could handle the resto. Anyone in the Chicago area able to take a look for me? Its a 2 day drive for me.
289, A/T, P/S, added PDB, vinyl top, repainted dark (almost black) blue, has incorrect badging.

Well Neil, if you do get it and get it back to the original color it will be the best color. ;-)

I remember this car being advertised here on E bay or Craigslist. Owner says it has the correct HCS badges. Acapulco Blue original color is nice!! Should look great when it looks like an HCS!!
