Hi all, I am a newbie here and just want to say HI.
I have a 68 coupe that I am converting to a Cal. Special.
I have the trunk, tail panel, and fender extensions, I got them from Tony Branda at a show in Columbus, he did not have the side scoops. I have seen alot of stories on these scoops, and just want to know who makes the best ones.
I hope the Branda tail panel, trunk and extensions fit good. I am doing the engine bay and chassis first before I get to the body. Any help/suggestions would be helpful.
Thanks for the time,
Bill

I guess it depends whether or not you you want the witness lines on the fronts of the scoops and how much you want to spend. Bill just bought a set for his car but I don't remember where he got them.

All the vendors carry scoops. Rebel Mustang, Stangaholics, Mustangs Unlimited, Branda, Larry's, The Paddock, NPD, Mustangs Plus, John's. They even come up on eBay from time to time. The one I bought for my car was from eBay so I don't know who made it.

Back to this clone idea. Are you going to try to duplicated every tiny detail or are you looking to make a car that looks like a GT/CS to the casual observer?

Years ago when I made my clone I was going to put GT/SC on the scoops, which is what some of the early prototypes had on them. Even some of Ford's old promotional literature shows cars with GT/SC on the scoops. SC stood for "Sport Coupe".

Welcome to the site. When restoring our car, we had to buy everything - every panel, every door, every hood and decklid.

I bought all of my fiberglass from Branda. I only needed one scoop as I did have one scoop that was good. I can't say it is the best but was fine for my car.

I ended up getting the original fiberglass tail light panel. We did not think we were going to find it so I ordered one from Branda. I am actually very glad we found the old one as the Branda one did not fit.

As well, the rear quarter extensions took alot of work to match the curve of the rear quarter panel. Just a heads up!!

Good luck and ask away on the questions.

This raises a question I have to ask ...

Once you purchase all the parts and then add the time spent to get it just right. What is the savings in creating a clone as opposed to buying a decent original GT/CS or HCS and restoring it?

I guess it's a lot cheaper if you're not concerned on originality, investment and resale huh?

There's a fiberglass package, scoops included for under $800 currently on eBay right now. I guess if you have a decent coupe to start I can see how it would be cheaper. I guess I convinced myself already.

I like the Little Red idea too though

Good Luck Bill! This is a great site for info ... pictures please too ... what's the car look like now?

Bill,

Go with the ones from Rebel Mustang like Jason suggested. Bought mine a couple months ago and was not sure of the quality of them until I showed them to a neighbor that does a lot of fiberglass work on 67/68 mustangs and he was very impressed with the thickness and sturdiness of them. Also, they do come with the witness lines if you're a stickler for details. They do cost a bit more than other manufactuers but quality comes with a price.
Welcome to the forum and good luck with your clone project!

Cheers!

Trap,

I noticed the "428" under your name "Trap68". You got a 428 something?

Do I have a 428 something??? Nah, just a measley 302 but the car I'm trying to clone has that badge on it (any guesses???) so I thought it would be a cool avatar. When I get done cloning it it will still have the 302 but will have a paxton aiding it in the HP department.

Cheers!

I bought mine from E-bay also. The add said they were from "Melvin's Classic Ford Parts in Conyers, GA"
They look good to me, don't know if that place still exists or not.
Welcome to the site.
Good first name.

Hi all, Thanks for the replies, I think that I am going with the Rebel Mustang set of side scoops, as far as buying a GT/CS already done or a resto project? I picked the 68 I have from California, and it is the most rust free car I have seen yet. the frame rails still have red paint on them from the factory. I have also considered a LI'll Red, but that may be a future addition. I will try to post pics this weekend as I am painting the engine bay and replacing the suspension,

I'll have to dig up some photos of my car, I did register my car, but there's more I want to put in. My car is all original, except for the driver's door (the question I have is when the driver's door is replaced, do they transfer the warranty/vin plate to the new door?)(I thought at first it was lost, but gladly was found!) and the trunk suffered some minor damage, which was repaired. I'm the third owner to it, my Dad was a second owner. He traded in his "last" Catillac for it, back in 1969 in Billings Montana. It didn't have very many miles on it when he bought it. He signed the car over to me back in 1978 and it's been in my possession since. The car has a 289 engine in it, automatic C4, candy apple red with white stripes. Interior is red with vinyl bucket seats.
I could tell some funny stories about that car if you're interested in reading about it. To this day I still get my chuckles about it.

Welcome to the site Stacey. Yes the data plate should be transferred to your new drivers door. You can also purchase a new data plate from Marti Auto Works along with a Marti report. I did this when I replaced my drivers door. I was very pleased with the replacement plate.
