1968 Painting questions

OK, so I have taken my car to the body and paint shop. Dropped off most of the body parts and trim pieces that should be painted.

Let me pick your collective brains.

Headlight rings made of pot metal, those get painted body color. Correct?

Going for a color change in and out, sorry folks, I can't do springtime yellow with light ivy green interior.:tongue:

Acapulco blue with a black interior is what I have decided on.
Exterior color code D, and the interior will be 2A.

The black interior paint, it should it be a medium gloss. Correct?

I like springtime yellow and black interior. With Ivy, no. Good choice on the color change.

I have used Accumatch Products, 67-73 Ford Black Charcoal - Metallic (#L-4464). NPD has a similar product (Charcoal Black metallic, P/N AP-4464) . I do not think they are the same. I have seen both and, personally, I think the NPD product is too grey.

One important mistake painters make on our cars is they paint the end caps vertically instead of horizontally so they sometimes look like they are a different color.

If the painter is going to paint the end caps off the car please ask him to spray them in the same direction he sprays the rest of the car.

I've used the NPD, a light spray over semi-gloss black gave an almost perfect match to OEM parts off my '68 San Jose.

It does require some "touch", I used 3 or 4 light coats from 10"-12" away over the SGB. Goes on "dry" and leaves some "fur". Let it dry, wipe with a rag and she's good to go.

If you spray close-and-wet and don't go over a SGB base the color does come out different.

If your doing the whole "as original" thing consider the following

Painted on the car with exterior color (so all mounting hardware got covered)
Doors, trunk lid, end cars (space reward approx 1/4") and rear valance (hung straight down with two screws and rear bumper guard brackets installed)

Interior color was applied before the exterior color. Common mistake is taking the interior color all the way to the weather strip channel on the bottom of the door.

Black engine compartment black was apllied over the body color, most of the time equal with the front edge or the firewall to cowl pinch weld leading edge. The edge of the black paint was not masked off but rather a soft edge

The defroster openings (around the openings) was blacked out over the body color application
