Peggy's T-Bird has a stock 302 4BBL (Edelbrock 500 CFM) A/T (C-4), and P/S. Hardtop & soft top. White, B&W interior.
I have to replace the heater core, O/H MC, pull the engine to paint, and detail the engine compartment.
IMHO, the old Y blocks (272, 292, 312) make really good boat anchors. Hence the 302 & C-4. GREAT driveability. She loves this car. She asked me (several years ago) if I would paint it Pink for her. I told her my spraygun wouldn't spray pink paint- it would regurgitate it.:eek: So it has remained White.

I think maintenance would suffer as well. Who would want to test drive a pink car to see what that rattle was?

Peggy wants you to paint it 1957 Dusk Rose? It was a factory color. Or more like Pepto Bismol pink?

The 292/312 engine was not all that bad. Heavy when compared to a 302. Now the old Fordamatic auto tranny. Now that is a great boat anchor!!! Of course these days you can get a bell housing to mate an AOD or modern 5 speed behind an old Y block.

When I put the 428 Cobra Jet and C6 in my 1957, 2 door Station Wagon I learned something yet again. The motor mounts and their relationship to the the bell house surface between a Y Block and an FE are identical. I put the Cobra Jet in the wagon on Y block motor mounts. Had to fabricate a rear cross member for the C6 as it was different than the Fordamatic. The Y block was fading out as the FE came into play so the cars in the late 1950’s would accept either.

So Neil!! How about an all aluminum 427 FE motor for Peggy? Now were talking!! And they make bell houses to put an AOD behind the FE!! YAAAA BAAABBEE imagine what would happen when Peggy tromped the loud pedal down in that bad boy!!!

I love to spend other peoples money!!

What have I got here?
Pulled the engine yesterday, and the casting #'s above the starter mounting area are C90E-6015-C. How do you decipher it?

According to this site it may be a '69 351 (note the question mark) while others claim it's a '69 302.

Sounds like you have a 351W. Not original, but a whole lot more cubic inches! Stroke that bad boy!!!

Off the internet:

The 351W and 302 are very different:

The 351W has a taller deck height than the 302. (a 302 will have the intake almost flush with the base of the distributor... where it goes into the block..... a 351w will have about 1/2 inch lip there where the intake meets the block.)

Since the deck height is taller the intake manifold is wider on the 351w than on the 302.

The 351W uses a larger main journal than the 302. there are 2 physical ways of telling a 302 vs. a 351w. Also, in between the frost plugs on a 351W there will be what appears to be a triangle or diamond (the way I was told) indented cast into the block...a 302 doesn't have those.

a 351W is wider between the heads compared to a 302 (the intake manifold is wider by about 1-1/2") and 351 pistons have a different pin height. You can use 302 pistons in a 351 if you stroke it to a 393

quick ID tip: The lower thermostat housing bolt on the 302 will be below the top of the water pump and you won't be able to put a socket on it. On the 351W you can remove the bolt with a socket.

8.2 deck height 302 and 289. 9.5 for the 351. Much wider. Measure the width of the intake and compare it to a 302/289 as Arlie suggested. It is way wider.

The intake manifold is 9" width, and David's info as to the thermostat housing lower bolt being inaccessible using a socket, these two points indicate its a 302.
I haven't removed the valve covers yet, but I'm confident the casting marks on the heads will say 302 also. Here's a photo of the filthy hunk of iron (note the missing freeze plug. I'm going to replace all of them, precautionary.)

Neil,

I have a '69 351w in my GT/CS and the difference I have found in the intakes are the 351 has 16 mounting bolts( 1 extra at each corner), and the 289/302 has 12 bolts. The 351w also has a different firing order(1 - 3 - 7 - 2 - 6 - 5 - 4 - 8). found that out the hard way also, thinking I had a 302.

My post (#11 above) shows a 302 with a REAR SUMP. And of course the oil pan also has the rear sump cavity. The block cast # reads C90E-6051-C. I don't ever recall seeing a 302 with a rear sump. What in the world have I got here? Runs OK, oil pressure OK. Just curious.

Trucks and Bronco's had rear sump.because of the front differential.
