Hey everybody. My dad and I need to know what shop manuals and books to get before we start taking apart my car. Who sells these books? Sorry if I am bringing up an old question.

Also, does anybody have any advice on things to be careful doing when taking it apart to not mess up the car's originality? - Jack

Jack-
Several manuals available thru Mustang parts suppliers. Keep this in mind- clubpro (Ron) can furnish most anything you need at GOOD pricing. Just PM him with your wants/needs, and he'll take care of you.

Jack, are you looking for shop manuals for '68 Mustangs or are you looking for GT/CS-specific manuals?

Regarding the restoration:
- Buy a digital camera and take pictures of EVERYTHING at EVERY STAGE of disassembly.

- Buy a gross of freezer bags in all different sizes (the ones you can write on), then bag EVERY PART, especially those stupid little nuts and bolts that don't look important. They are important!!

- If you forget how something goes together ask us.

- If you need any correct GT/CS parts ask us.

- If you want us to take photos of parts on our cars ask us.

A standard 1968 Mustang Shop Manual (about the size of a phone book) will be very helpful - it does not cover the GT/CS parts, but it covers everything else. You can buy it on ebay easily.

For the GT/CS parts, there is only one book and it is very hard to find and expensive. The best thing to do when dealing with those parts is to ask us here. We love questions - and there is a lot of experience here waiting to help you.

Let the questions begin  Casey

I picked up a set of Jim Osborn Assembly Manuals for Interior, Electrical, Chassis, Weld & Sealant etc. These are excellent.

All great ideas. I would add the following

1- Decide where you are going with the car. Driver, show car, concours..... Changing your mind will cost many more $$$'s tor be wasted later in the game. Also what the end should look like will guide your choices through the process. Making the wrong choices during disassembly, repair...... or any other step will eliminate options later.

2- All the book and manuals are great but do not trust ANY as the final word. Ask questions as you go so you can receive the most up to date (yes we are learning new things everyday) information to help you.

3- About 50% of the time reproduction parts will not fit or look like the original parts. So retaining and refinishing your original parts can be very important. If you choose to go with a bunch of reproduction parts you car will look like every other catalog car out there :(

4- Your going to spend $30,000 on up on this car. Take it slowly, get some help and advise, make your educated choices and stick with the plan

Good luck

Make sure you have a digital camera. If you don't have one get one.
Take a bazillion photos from every angle you can think of, top, bottom, under fender wells, under dash, under hood, do this without your Dad watching. When you think you have enough, move them off the camera and then get your Dad to do the same thing. You will find you still have things you missed and those will be the ones you wish you had.
That's where we come to your aide. And happily I might add
