My GT/CS was built mid-March for the San Francisco area. It has the hose running from the oil breather to the air cleaner and a PCV valve on the right side valve cover. It is a C code 2v 289. Would it have come from the factory with a Thermactor or smog pump?

Thanks.

Only if it originally came with a manual transmission.

I see that you are in Canada. From what I have read, Canadian DSO cars normally did not get shipped with the emissions. 1968 289/302 cars still had the open emissions systems. That is why most Canadian sold cars look like they have 1967 air cleaners.

Actually ...

Actually, Steve's car was originally sold in California and then imported into Canada years later. It isn't a Canadian DSO car, so it likely started out with the emissions controls installed ...

I have not seen an Automatic equipped car with a smog pump. Scott would know this better than I as seen in the post above. I think you are safe in your restoration without a smog pump.

For 1968 in the USA, the basic rules were:
  • IMCO with an Autolite carburetor and automatic transmissions
  • Thermactor with any manual transmission
  • Thermactor with a factory installed Holley carburetor - regardless of transmission

Thanks for the input guys. After I posted, I looked it up in the GT/CS book. The information indicated that the Thermactor would be installed in any manual transmission car and any automatic car with a performance engine. Mine definitely would not have had one.

IMCO was detuned to meet emissions without the smog tubes, etc. by using a different carb, timing, etc.

"The IMCO system uses thermostatically controlled, heated-air induction systems, dual diaphragm vacuum advance distributors, anti-dieseling throttle-stop solenoids, a distributer modulation system, a transmission-regulated spark system, and a spark Delay system. The Thermactor system uses a belt-driven pump to force air into each exhaust port behind the exhaust valve to help burn excess unburned hydrocarbons before they reach the atmosphere." So IMCO looks like a carb and engine...
