It has been a good while since I’ve posted and figured I needed to say hello to everyone! :thumb: There are some big changes coming for me in the next 6 months, including a possible move back to Houston or elsewhere in Texas. Just means I will be able to pick Arlie’s brain a lot more if I move to Houston! I could also use a little expert advice from the family.

I have been chasing down a couple vacuum leaks over the past few weeks trying to get everything tuned and back into good working order. The other day I found that one of the plastic arms coming off the power brake booster check valve was cracked, and subsequently broke off when I tried to ease off the old hose. I found a universal replacement at AutoZone. However, it requires two rubber grommets to make a flush seal. Both grommets produce a lousy seal that feels unreliable. Is there a better answer from the local stores or do I need to bite the bullet and order the $20 replacement from Dallas Mustang? The picture that Dallas Mustang has in their catalog looks identical to what I just bought. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Also, for the tuning experts: Where is the correct location to attach the vacuum gauge? I have heard a couple answers over the years but want to make sure I am getting the right reading.

Two grommets? Should just be one for the check valve. Many OEM valves had to taps, and then needed cap. If that is what you mean then yes, buy the right part.

This shows the correct grommet style, tapered end at the booster side, groove to clip into the body. The taps are wrong.

This is a single tap option.

And can buy the grommet separately

And this pair is only $10.

Again different style. Most I have seen have two taps off the side.

NPD sells the valve for about $9 and the grommet for $3.

To check vacuum, anywhere off the intake is basically the same.

Well, I'll probably be living in Spokane before the end of the year! Decided to go back home to the PNW.

Appreciate the quick answer Dalorzo. The CJ Pony valve looks like it might be the right size. Attached is a picture of my original, on the right, and the universal replacement and grommets, on the left. The original has a much lager, in diameter, tapered end that fits into the booster as compared to the replacement. You are correct about the two taps, my second tap was capped off.

Arlie I will have to come by before you leave and do lunch or something!

Your car should have a vacuum source behind the carb in the intake manifold. Your automatic vacuum modulator is sourced from this fitting. A good place to check for bad hoses and sometimes additional port's which are capped off. If you are just checking at idle this is a good source of vacuum. If you want to drive with a long hose into the car, if there is a second port, use it. If not install a "t" fitting in the line.

I may have to make a trip to Spokane to welcome you. Let me know once you get settled. If the weather's decent I may just crank up my Special and do a visit.
