A couple of months ago, I had yet another clutch cable break on my 65 convertible. I'd had enough, so I decided to purchase a hydraulic clutch kit. When I got it and went to install it, I quickly figured out that it wouldn't work with the power booster I had. I called the manufacturer, and they told me that I was correct. Their kit would only work in a 65 with power brakes if I purchased a special bracket for another $100. Of course, their catalog, nor any of their literature made any mention of this. So, I purchased the bracket, only to find out that it would only work with a stock booster, not with the one I had purchased in order to install a dual master cylinder.
So, I decided to install a hydra-boost system, so everything would fit nicely. The hydra-boost runs off of the power steering pump instead of vacuum. Now the manufacturer didn't tell me that the power steering pump I had would really wouldn't work with this system. It quickly started whining and wanting to kill the engine every time I would come to a stop.
So, I decided to go with a Saginaw pump. The only problem I had was getting it to work with the March pulley and bracket system I had. I found a guy who said he could make it work if I purchased a couple of idler pulleys. He finally got it working today.
I was very excited about getting my car back today. It was a beautiful, sunny day here in SoCal, perfect for driving the convertible. I really hadn't driven it much because of the whining power steering pump since the beginning of December. I took it home, cleaned it up, and headed out for a drive. I was leaving my neighborhood, crossing a major thoroughfare, and a white Prius ran a redlight and hit me in the rear quarterpanel, right behind the wheel. I wanted to kill him.
Anyway, here's a pic of my really trick, one-off, pulley system.
