The chunks of petrified seal can also plug the oil return holes causing the oil to stay in the top part of the engine. That creates a huge problem.

According to the Ford Parts Manual Mustangs and T-birds use part number C8ZZ-6530322-A window crank handle. All other Fords use C8AZ-7630322-A. My guess is that as the regulators wore and the tracks got sticky people switched to the longer handles for added leverage.
