Yes, all other yellow cars I've seen have had black stripes. The white on yellow was very subtle. It made the car look elegant rather than the mean look the black on white gives the cars.

I knew a guy back in the '70s who had a yellow GT/CS with white stripes, and it was probably original. I've never seen another.

Auto parts stores used to sell punches but if you are looking for the exact font and depth it might be a long search. Doesn't Branda offer some sort of VIN reproduction services, or supplies, or something?

After the 0000 steel wool you can also use metal polish if you wish. Try to stay away from chrome polish since it can be a little too abrasive. After the metal polish I usually use plexiglass cleaner, but any similar product used for polishing plastics will work.

Steve, can you make a new blank plate out of sheet metal, stamp it with a set of punches, and then use the NPD overlay? What is the NPD overlay? Is it just the black graphics that goes around the edges of the plate?

There are a couple tachometers on ebay right now for what seems to be very low prices. If you're interested do a search on 67 and 68 Cougars. One auction ends in 2 hours and the other ends in a couple days.
