Casey, When I tore my engine down last winter, the tops of the pistons looked similar to yours. Mine were stamped .030 which indicated that it had been bored out 30 thousandths of an inch. My engine also turned out to be a 1970 vintage 302 and not the original 289. -Jeff

I'm not an expert, but... do you see that piston 3 is very non-carbonated compared to the other three? (Hard to tell if it's just the flash on the camera). I wonder if the non-roller cam had something to do with number three running really hot and burning through the head gasket? Something's up...

5.0 dip stick hole Casey, Yes. The newer 5.0 blocks have a casting "hole" on the side rear above where the pan bolts on. To use a '68 timing cover with the oil dip stick cast into it, you need to "fill in" (gently tap in with a hammer) the 5.0 block's cast hole with a metal dowel pin...and...

Doug, I have the deluxe interior. While re-doing my interior, I re-applied the vinyl on the rear quarters(from a kit purchased from Mustangs Plus). Just a tib bit- make sure NOT to stretch the material too much when gluing up (contact cement is what's suggested) the vinyl on the sheet metal...
