I believe this car may have many unanswered questions. I don't believe the Marti report shows California Special on it but was being sold as a Prototype at one point.

I saw the car on the FB marketplace and it’s super loaded. That’s said, would a marti report confirm it’s a real Cal Special and are their physical signs on that body that can confirm it’s a promo car? For example, removing the tail light panel or inspecting the underside of the fiberglass scoops and/or trunk end caps?

Yes, one of us would need to inspect the car for all the correct GT/CS items. I don’t see any other way to authenticate it.

On the Marty report, the first option listed is a white paint stripe. What is that? (showing my ignorance here)
Is it the 2 hood blinker recesses painted white?

It’s a pinstripe that runs along the tops of the fenders and doors.

fake cal special most likely

I looked over the guy selling this cal special's home page and found the same car without the Cal Special Grill, hood locks and fog lights. He added them when he went to sell it and apparently has made up this story that it is a prototype.

I exchanged emails with the seller. He seemed to be making up the story as he went along. His 'friend' told him the car was a prototype, but he wouldn't let me contact the 'friend'.

We discussed this car a time or two in the past. See above and the link to a previous thread. The seller claimed it is a GT/CS prototype.

I’m glad to see Mecum changed the description to just a GT after I sent them a note. Kudos to them.

The owner called me to ask if his car could be a GT CS. When I told him that a Dearborn car could not possibly be a GTCS he said that he would have the Mecum description changed. It still was a cool car.

Well maybe now that they included this on the listing people will have a better understanding about this car.

  • Previous restoration that incorporated styling and design cues from the 1968 Mustang GT California special
