Back Seat/Trunk Separation Material

My car has some old, gross, smelly jute-type material between the trunk and the rear seat. Does anyone know of a supplier for this or similar material? I'm not really concerned with originality if there is a better product out there.

Arlie,
There are metal divider plates available. I was considered one of these for my car.
They are supposed to protect from tank fires but I'll guess they quite the car down a bit too.
They are about $90

The replacement Jute type material is available from most Mustang Supply warehouses. You might try Dallas Mustang or Tony Branda. I bought mine from Virginia Classic Mustang. Good Luck!

Arlie;
I have these dividers in both my cars and love them. Not only do they cut down on noise from the trunk area but, they make a great place to mount an amp etc. without having to drill into the body or frame of the car.

Now that is a brilliant idea. I'm sold. I'd been kicking around that idea.[/quote]

You can get a cardboard trunk/seat divider for $13 from most Mustang dealers. I believe that cardboard is the correct divider. (HCSStang, do you know?) I dont think metal was originally used, and it cost about $80. I got my cardboard version from Larry's Mustang. Casey

Casey,

I think cardboard was used in the 65 and 66 Mustangs. My 65 has the original cardboard still in it. My 67 and 68 have the jute material.

Casey;
You are correct. Cardboard was used originally and if your going for original then that is what you would use. Since neither of my cars is concourse and both have been modified I opted for the steel barrier to have an alternative for mounting my stereo amp not to mention I like the safety factor associated with it versus cardboard.

The jute material was used on the back of the seat frames. There was also a cardboard piece used to seperate the trunk from the seating area of the car. These items can be obtained from any restoration shop.

Not to sound "too" dramatic, but the idea of an exploding gas tank is no laughing matter. I have a tape of the 60 minutes II segment of the '67 coupe rear end crash test (using water instead of gas), and if you saw it, you'd have a fuel cell AND a metal rear seat shield in there ASAP.

It's one thing to have the gas tank rupture, but it's the filler neck that can get sheared off, and you're no different than a Pinto.

Very well put Paul. Even though I've always had and redone Mustangs, that has been the one thing that has stayed in the back of my mind when ever I drive either of my cars. I lost two good friends in High School due to that very problem. That's why I opted for the steel barrier. May not be a total solution but, any extra time I can get to get out of the car and I'll take it.

I was at a car show a couple of years ago and was approached by a guy that was passing out literature on this subject. I don't know if he was selling the metal parts or what. He must of been a chev man. As Paul was saying it is something to think about.

Don,
how does it attach to the car? Is it welded in or held in with screws?

Doug;
You can attache it either way. Spot welds or sheet metal screws. I attached mine using silicone and small bolts with a self locking nut on the backside. I did it that way mainly to still be able to remove it if I need to work on the shocks or remove my stereo amp. I had to do a little grinding to get it to fit properly around the top seat hangers but, it fits fine once you do that. I then took a can of black spray paint and painted the bolts so you couldn't see them from looking into the trunk.

Jason: The bolt and self locking nut kinda killes your sharp bullet theory. ::) Bottom line, it's still not air tight but, it does provide some form of protection. Without it, the entire interior of the car will fill with flame almost immediately if the rear tank should explode.
