You can attache it either way. Spot welds or sheet metal screws. I attached mine using silicone and small bolts with a self locking nut on the backside. I did it that way mainly to still be able to remove it if I need to work on the shocks or remove my stereo amp. I had to do a little grinding to get it to fit properly around the top seat hangers but, it fits fine once you do that. I then took a can of black spray paint and painted the bolts so you couldn't see them from looking into the trunk.
Jason: The bolt and self locking nut kinda killes your sharp bullet theory. :

Bottom line, it's still not air tight but, it does provide some form of protection. Without it, the entire interior of the car will fill with flame almost immediately if the rear tank should explode.
