The truck missed a turn trying to exit in Brea and crashed into four cars, authorities say.

The driver of a big rig missed a turn trying to exit the 57 freeway just after 7:40 a.m., flipping the rig on its side and sending it slamming into four cars, authorities said.

Five people were injured, including two seriously, in the morning rush-hour accident, which forced the closure of the north and southbound off-ramps at Lambert Road, Brea police Sgt. Darrin Devereux said. All westbound lanes of Lambert were also shut down.

Two people were taken to hospitals. The extent of their injuries was not yet known, Devereux said.

Big rig flips, crushes 3 cars
Rush-hour crash on the Orange (57) Freeway in Brea leaves five people injured, snarls traffic for miles.

A big rig hauling hair gel flew off the Lambert Road off-ramp at the Orange (57) Freeway during rush hour this morning, flipping the truck on its side and flattening three other cars when the truck's driver failed to negotiate the turn, authorities said.

The crushing blow delivered by the big rig's toppling crumpled a 1968 blue Ford Mustang and touched off another small chain-reaction collision. Five people were injured, including a 20-year-old woman who had to be cut from her RAV 4 sports utility vehicle. Miraculously, authorities said, no one was killed in the spectacular wreck.

Two people, including the truck's driver, Larry Corrales, 52, of Claremont, were taken to hospitals for treatment. Shannon Reeve, 20, of San Dimas was cut out of her RAV 4 by Brea firefighters but walked away from the crash.

David Bourgeois, 41, of Brea was driving home from Bible study when the big rig overturned, crushing his 1968 blue Mustang. The wreck left the car's vanity plate – Blue 68 – barely visible from underneath the rig's front end. Bourgeois was taken to a hospital for undisclosed injuries.

"Whether it was where the truck was loaded or the last movements they took before the big rig came crashing over, I don't know," Brea police Sgt. Darrin Devereux said. "If you look at the driver's seat of the Mustang, half of where you should be sitting is gone. It's just gone. It's just amazing no one was killed."

Amber Catchings, 23, of Rancho Cucamonga was driving a tan Toyota Camry when the overturned rig crushed half of her car. The impact pushed her car into a white Lexus driven by Ann Song, 46, of Walnut. Song's car skidded into a black Ford Escape in front of her. The driver, Eileen Persson, 53, of Walnut was not injured.

The northbound and southbound Lambert off-ramps were shut down for more than four hours, snarling traffic for miles on the 57 Freeway and surrounding surface streets.

Corrales was driving too quickly to complete the turn at the exit, Devereux said. He has not been cited.

A close call on the 57
Only thing crushed when big rig landed on him was his vintage Mustang, says Brea man.

BREA – Dave Bourgeois still has his sense of humor intact despite being nearly crushed to death by a big rig hauling hair goo.

"Last thing I need is a tombstone that says death by hair gel," Bourgeois said Monday.

During morning rush hour, a big rig flew off the Lambert Road off-ramp at the Orange (57) Freeway, landed on its side and flattened three cars including Bourgeois', authorities said. No one was killed.

Bourgeois, 41, of Brea was driving home from Bible study when the big rig crushed his beloved 1968 blue Mustang – missing Bourgeois by inches.

The wreck left the car's vanity plate – Blue 68 – barely visible from underneath the rig's front end. Bourgeois was taken to a hospital where he was treated for minor injuries. But he managed to walk away with just bruising and soreness.

"If you look at the driver's seat of the Mustang, half of where you should be sitting is gone. It's just gone," Brea police Sgt. Darrin Devereux said. "It's just amazing no one was killed."

Bourgeois said that after the crash, he looked up to see the big rig's cab about six inches from his face. It crushed nearly the entire Mustang, except the pocket where he sat.

If he'd been playing with the stereo, reaching for his cell phone or even the Bible on the seat nearby, Bourgeois said he'd most likely be dead.

The big rig crash touched off a small chain-reaction with a total of five people injured. Two others, including the truck's driver, Larry Corrales, 52, of Claremont, were taken to hospitals. Corrales was driving too quickly to complete the turn at the exit, Devereux said. The driver was not cited.

Bourgeois said he remembers only snippets of the crash, including that he was on the off-ramp waiting to make a left turn.

"Next thing I know there was a truck in my car," he said.

Bourgeois said he could barely breathe at first because he was pinned to the seat.

"I can't stay here very long. I won't make it," he said he thought to himself.

That's when a man broke a window and helped him out. Dazed, Bourgeois said he crawled over to the median.

Then he wiggled his toes and fingers.

"Looks like I'm all here," he thought.

He said the crash put things in perspective.

"The first thing I did was call my wife," Bourgeois said. And the second? He admits it did cross his mind that "my beautiful car has been pulverized."

But, he adds, it wasn't just any car. It was the car that he drove on his first date with his future wife, the car they drove away in after their wedding.

He got it 23 years ago and had planned on giving it to one of his five children.

"We're sad," Bourgeois said.

"No. We're happy you're alive," quipped his wife.
