Does anyone know if it is possible to purchase a woodgrain kit for a '68 floor console?

Dont know if you have ever bought anything from Mustangs Unlimted or not. We did. We bought alot from them and they were good to work with us.

Anyway, it appears to me like they have a kit that fits a 68 that would include dash, glovebox, heater control and console for $239.95. You would have to speak to them before ordering to ensure it would fit your car.

Thanks Paul. That would be a good route if I hadn't already bought a woodgrain instrument bezel and the stickers for the rest of the dash. I think I might buy the woodgrain for the upper console and cut it down for the lower console. If it doesn't work I'm out only 20 bucks.

My car came with the woodgrained overhead console but the lower console is a stippled finish in black color that matches my dash. Is a woodgrain something you want to customize or is that to restore to original status? Which is correct?

It's going to be a slight custom look. I figure it'll look good until the first time I spill a milk shake on it, and if I don't like it I can always pull it off and go back to original. I'll probably fill in the stipples with spot putty so it can be removed with lacquer thinner.

I adding little things that are a little different. The type of thing that makes people walk away wondering if the item in question was every offered by Ford. Kind of drves them crazy!

Steve - mine has the same, woodgrain overhead console and the rest is black. I wondered the same thing. Will have to check my books when I get home. Casey

I think woodgrain might've been reserved for Ford's Deluxe Interior option (I know it was for '64.5-'66, aka Pony interior, and it also was in '69-'70 like with my '70 Mach 1).

So if you know that your car had the Deluxe Interior option (Marti Report can confirm this), then woodgrain should be correct for your car ;).

You might call Mustangs Unlimted just to see if you can buy the console portion (keep from cutting something down).

As stated earlier, only the Deluxe interior cars received the overhead console. It could not be purchased as a seperate option. In 68' they came with the wood grain. In 67' they were brushed aluminum to match the dash for that year. I'd like to add one to my car, but I'm afriad to cut the headliner.

I've been reading the '68 Mustang dealer brochure and all the pictures of the lower consoles show the black finish. There is no mention of a woodgrain lower console treatment.

Under Interior Decor Group it says:

Courtesy door lights

Smart grille design in the lower door interior trim panels

Roof console with twin map lights and switches on Hartdop and 2+2

Simulated wood-grained steering wheel

Bright accent on pedals

Simulated wood-grained instrument panel and roof console applique

T-bar shift lever with vinyl grip insert when equipped with SelectShift

Seat back insert trim buttons

Electric clock

Padded quarter trim panels (Hardtop only)

It's interesting that nowhere in the brochure does it show the overhead console or the padded quarter trim panels

I'm pretty sure there was no woodgrain option and the console should be black. The issue I have with a black console top is that there is no black anywhere else in the car, except the window rubber and the door speaker/light grilles. I'm going to give the woodgrain a shot and see how it looks. Should be interesting!

Their prices for overhead consoles are great, especially if they have been reconditioned. $250 with the bracket included.

That's not a bad price for an overhead console. I'm having mine reconditioned at "Just Dashes" in Van Nuys, CA and the charge for that is $265.00 with shipping. Should have it back next week.

There was a lower console on eBay a few weeks ago that had a woodgrain overlay of some sort. I wonder is this is the $300+ kit I've seen from one of the vendors?

Sorry it took so long to post this pic. Here is the finished overhead console. The restoration work was done at "Just Dashes" in Southern Cal. They did a great job on it. I added the woodgrain, new map lites and buttons. Will be installing after the headliner goes in.
