I have just found out that the "California Special" that has been in my family for over 15 years is actually a HCS. I got to thinking that the DSO being 51 just might make this car a HSC. The next thing that caught my eyes was the build date 19u, which indicated production during the time frame of the HCS's. Does anyone out there know about how many of these cars exist? The serial number is 8r01c169958 and is listed in the Gallery under Art Sahlstein.I have previously placed the car in the CS registry and now have to change this. How do I make this change? I am just wondering how many of these cars have lost their identity over the years and being converted to CS cars due to the decals being unavailable. I would like to hear from other owners of these cars!!!! Thanks Art in Texas
I have just edited the Gallery the car is under 1968 High Country Special

I'm sure there are several HCS cars that have been mistakenly restored as GT/CS. And probably even a few that have been "restored" to stock Mustang trim.

If your DSO is 51 then it's certainly a HCS. Well, to be technical it means it's definitely not a GT/CS. It could still be a standard Mustang that has been made to look like a Special, but I'll assume you're pretty sure it's a real Special.

I live in Euless, Texas. I just got the Marti info which verified my suspitions. The car is rust free due to much of it's life being spent in Phoenix Az.

Euless isn't too far from where you bought your car Arlie.

Art, got your phone message yesterday about your '68 HCS. Call back again one evening soon, would you please? This car is in the HCS registery and last owner listed is James Allison of Odessa, Tx. Presently, I have about 150 of the '68 HCS cars in the registry of the 251 produced. No one can tell us how many may still exist. High Country Bob here.

Nice looking car!!! Looks like you need to order some posts from High Country Bob for the Lucus lights. I left a note on the gallery but does the Shelby and other Mustangs below to you as well, or family? Does the Shelby run??

The shelby is my uncles car and is one of the 15 other than yellow special paint cars listed at www.1968cobra.com under Elman Sandell. At one time we had 2 of the 15. Car is for sale as well as the 1969 Mach r-code air car in the picture. Thanks Art

Hey everyone, been busy dusting the pollen off my two 68 HCS'. Glad to see a thread on here talking about HCS mustangs. I'm getting one ready for crusing, the other will be for show. Welcome, glad you figured out we now have 150 cars in the registry, thats great! The other 101 need to be found or probably are lost in the bone yard.

I was looking at the post from asahlstein posted then went to the pictures from the AO Smith plant. I noticed what looks like a coupe with a non matching deck lid and the tail lights are white. Could this have been a project California Special car ? I does not fit in with the Shelbys in the picture.
