Greetings to all! I am new to your site and I must admit that I am a die hard Mopar guy however, the coolest car my dad ever had was blue 65 fastback when I was kid. I actually learned to drive in that car. Anyway, I have a "soft" spot for the older Mustangs. So, I was driving home from work today for the 1000th time and saw the back end of an older Mustang. I got out and looked behind the garage to find a green "California Special" Mustang. Car had not been driven in sometime and had 15 yrs old plates. Not knowing how to read a Ford VIN tag, i did notice the car had white buckets, with a 4-speed. It had the California script on it. The car appeared to be in good shape but it was obvious it had been sitting along time (minimal or little rust). I knocked on the door but no one was at home. I'd like to know a few things if possible:
1) What is the base engine for this car?
2) Is this a rare car w/ the 4-speed?
3)If the owner were to sell, what would be areasonable offer?
Any input would be appreciated!

I'd like to know a few things if possible:

1) What is the base engine for this car? Most of them had a 289 2V with a C4 automatic

2)Is this a rare car w/ the 4-speed? Rare, rare, rare

3)If the owner were to sell, what would be areasonable offer? Depends on too many factors. If it doesn't run, has a 6-cylinder, the floors are rotted out, and it needs a complete ground up it might be worth $6,000 but if it's drivable, has a 302 or a 390 and has minimal rust you might be looking at $15,000 - $20,000. If it's real nice and a 390 expect to spend $30,000 or more.
We'd really need pictures to give you a better guess.

Anyone else want to chime in?

You're slipping guys (and ladies)

Most importantly ... if you're considering a purchase ... get a Marti Report before any money exchanges hands.

The only way to tell if a car is a true California Special and not a clone is to get the Marti Report. They can fax you a basic report for less than $30 I think with the expedited service if I recall. It's money well spent.

What you want is their Production Report.

In any case - welcome to the site - good luck and post pictures!!!
We'll tell you more than you ever could imagine about a GT/CS and HCS.

...You also want to make sure it's an original 4-speed car...
