Without the VIN, how can you tell it's an early car? Always wanting to learn......

Early GT/CS (before mid-February) will have painted edges on the rear reflector and it is flush to the rear quarter panel. After this time, the rear reflectors extend out from the quarter panel and have a chrome edge. Casey

The rear quarter panels have the set-in reflectors verses the chrome framed reflectors the later cars have. The early ones had to have a hole cut into the panel to be fitted in.

You guys are quick! I new some cars had this, just didn't know it was the early ones. Are early cars not as good as later cars? Were they working out he kinks so to speak?

They were the ones that were produced before the workers strike. They ended up with more parts on them than the later ones. Like bumper guards and inside kneepads? I think thats what they call them. And of course the reflectors that took more time and effort to install since they had to cut a hole in the quarter panel. An early car is more desirable I think.

Thats what I meant when I said kneepads.:rofl:

Rhonda;
You were correct when you said knee pads. They were different than the pillar post pads. The knee pad ran through the middle of the dash area. All early models had both the pillar pads and the knee pads. My 68 GT Coupe has both. The CS has neither. They were discontinued as a cost cutting move after the strike to help Ford offset the new contract with UAW. As for the side markers on the rear quarter, Ford ran out of stamped quarters for the early reflectors and went to a bolt on type. This also was a cost cutting move in relation to to the strike.

Just to add to the mystery, my mid-Feb built car has the knee pad, and not the pillar pads. Maybe they were running out of certain parts before others. Casey

My GT/CS was built on Feb. 13 and has the knee pad and the pillar pads. Just realized my car is about to have a birthday. What should I get it?

That Blown J Code Just Makes My Day

This would have to rate probably AS my most favorite car to date on this Site. :grin:

you can have your S codes even R codes , but a blown J code special is just about as close to Californian style I could imagine.

Thanks. I'm kind of partial to it myself.
