Can anyone tell me what was included in the GT option package? Are consels (sp) included?

Somebody should make a book about what is or not available. Well okay I know one has been made but I cannot find one; otherwise I could answer my own questions.

Thanks - Doug

I am talking about a 1968 Californai Special

Doug,
The contents of this option varied from year to year. Are you speaking of a 1968? Upper consoles were part of the interior decor group or commonly called a deluxe interior. The lower console was a separate check mark on the option sheet to the best of my knowledge.

GT options normally involved suspension and braking upgrades. The GT option was tied to only certain engines in the earlier years. Later (67) they could be added on more of the common motors. Typically the GT option ended up on the more high performance engines, but not always.

In 65 and 66 the GT option could only be had on an "A" code 4 barrel 289, or a "K" code hipo 289. It consisted of higher rate front and rear springs, disc brakes, GT badging, dual exhaust with special rear valance, fog lights, special stripes, and larger sway bar. In 65 only it also included the five dial instument cluster that came standard in 66. In 67 it could be added to a "C" code 2 barrel 289. Similar options to the 65/66 with the dropping of the dual exhaust.

In 68 it could be had without disc brakes and with single exhaust again. Not sure of the engine options for 68. In 69 only a few early cars were GT's. Not sure of those options. The GT was replaced later in 69 by the Mach I option.

All of this to the best of my knowledge and research.

Here is something Don posted awhile back.

Below is a listing of what made up the GT Equipment Package:

- Round 4" fog lamps w/fog light wiring harness
-C-Stripe
-GT Badging on the Fenders
-Dual Exhaust with Chrome Quad Exhaust Tips
-GT Pop Open Gas Cap
-Special Handling Package (HD Leaf springs rear/HD Front Springs and HD shocks, 7/8" or 15/16" front sway bar, power front disc brakes, 16:1 steering gear)
-Styled Steel Wheels w/GT center caps and trim rings (either argent paint or chrome)
-Chrome Engine Components (Big Blocks Only)

Keep in mind on the GT/CS the round 4" fog lights, C Stripe, GT badging on fenders and GT Pop Open Gas cap were omitted and replaced with Marchal or Lucas fog lights, GT/CS side stripe, Pop Open gas cap with running horse emblem.

Keep in mind the GT option was not specific to the California Special. It was the same for all Mustangs with some minor exceptions. The Pop Off Gas Cap for example on a California Special and High Country Special was deleted from the GT option since the GT/CS and HCS had the Mustang (emblem) popoff cap.

I'll be including the GT Equipment Option description, with photos and part numbers. In my upcoming GT/CS Recogintion Guide & Owner's Manual" (updated edition from 1989, 200 pp.).

In '68 you had to have a 302 4bbl-J code , 390 2bbl-X-Code, 390 4bbl S-Code, or 428CJ-R Code to qualify for the GT Option; and Arlie covered the details of what is consisted of. However--if you got the GT option on a GT/CS, despite the fogs, stripes and gas cap superceded by the GT/CS versions--you were still charged full price for the GT stuff.
