This is a very interesting thread! Bob Teets ( WHAT A GREAT GUY!!) and his friend Russ stopped by my house last night and we brushed around this subject.
I totally agree with Arlie that the cars came down the assembly line as normal Mustang’ and at appropriate times they were given the CS/HCS option. And as I have said before, the first 14 GT/CS cars will not show in the Marti database as they were assembled prior to the option being a “block” to check on an option sheet at a Ford dealer. That is a huge “duh” to me. There is a rumor that the registrar has identified a debut car. IMO this car was ordered after the debut by someone who wanted one like the one on the stage. Nothing more nothing less.
And the main difference between a 1968 GT/CS and HCS is the deleting of the script and the scoop stripe with the decal for the HCS instead.
This again leads to the point that the holes for the script were not punched in the die when the quarter panel was formed but drilled via a template at the end. This would allow for the creation of an HCS by not drilling the holes and leaving the scoop stripe off and then as Bob says having the dealer install the decal. I will bet my first born that there are no “welded shut” script holes on Bob’s car of any HCS.
I would go further to say that maybe some of the cars were ordered as GT/CS cars and then changed to HCS cars at the end. Hence the possibility of HCS car having a GT/CS option on its Marti report or even vice versa.
I love these healthy discussions with people with open minds. Great people who can turn a wrench and have the understanding of sequence of events in assembly, and the knowledge that computer controlled robots did not manufacture these cars.
People who don’t deal in absolutes and have an open mind!
