1968 Help with transmission

Sara continues to love Walter, her '68 GTCS. However, we have noticed over the past few years that the auto trans seems to be developing a very distinct and powerful "clunk" when put him into gear at times. It doesn't happen all the time but when it does, it sounds and feels like that trans is going to drop onto the ground.

Any suggestions as to what might be causing this? Are we looking at a rebuild?

If we need to consider a rebuild do any of you know of a great rebuilder in the Atlanta area?

Thanks!

What are the engine rpm's when you get the clunk? If it's on fast idle when you put it in gear, it is louder and the car will feel like it's jerking because the torque converter is beginning to engage.

Good point. I don't recall that it is at a fast idle when it does this. I think it's generally at normal idling rpm when you put it into gear. Will pay more attention to when it happens. It's definitely a quite loud and solid clunk.
