...Just a Few Words...

I hate to interrupt the good-natured "tone" of these boards, but there are a few things I'd like to express, and to set the record straight. I see a trend here that I feel is undermining the purpose of these specific boards, about the "nuts and bolts" and history of the GT/CS. Those who come here to read the messages these days (I've seen the numbers), whether members or lurkers; must wonder: "what da heck is going on here?"

It's come to my attention (and others I've e-mailed with) that a few people wish to dominate the character of the conversations, and shoot down anyone who isn't "with it". They say that "familiarity breeds contempt", and this clique, I feel, has had a lot to do with others feeling dissappointed, or just not interested anymore to continue their legitimate conversations about the car that they love. If someone has a question about their fog lights (for instance), they might get an answer, but the conversation drifts back between the same five or so people. How does that make new people feel that have real questions? It's like coming to a party where you don't know anyone. It must be embarrassing, if not obnoxious to some of you reading these threads.

Don't get me wrong. There are some excellent folks here with great ideas. Very knowledgeable about engines, electrical, bodywork, sourcing, and even the 'net (thanks! Rich). I greatly respect and encourage those folks, and I've learned so much from them. I've made some great friendships with a few, and have attended a party that was a great personal experience.

I'm in a unique position of registrar of where I have to act as the public relations person (or as SAAC calls me "the guru") for the GT/CS, Little Red, and the Green Hornet. This is a little bit like being a celeb, where you can't really act up, or react on a more personal level. But, recently, I've been accused of "having a big ego", or arrogant, etc. by a couple of folks. This is news to me, but, since I consider the source(s), I don't really put much creedence into it.

Let me put this in perspective. I might seem to some of you that I have a strong character (at least in my internet persona), but for the members of the GT/CS Registry, I feel strongly about some things (like a CS class for MCA shows, getting the car recognized, appreciated, values, etc.). To do that, it requires what some might see as "a big ego". It's a subjective thing, and almost laughable, since those who really know me think I'm more of a big goofball (unless they're really good at lying! LOL!). My character is not what's important here. That's a personal thing, that, I feel only comes out when personalities clash in places like message boards, chat rooms, etc. (been there, done that--years ago). Ask ten people about YOUR own character, and you'll get fourteen answers). I'm not here to defend my personal character, nor do I wish to attack others. It's petty, trite, and immature; and it has nothing to do with what we're supposed to be doing here. Period.

There IS a difference between having a professional "attitude", and just being an plain 'ol egomaniac. You'll see the professional attitude in the corporate world, where things need to get done. I am a designer, so how I'm focused on realizing something creative might seem "indifferent", but it's NOT a personal thing, it's what you have to do to get your ideas through and completed. This is what I'm doing when I ask about things for the book.

What may be "too much" to one, may not be enough to another. In any case, my persona here may have been offensive to a few. For that, I am sorry. There are things that I need, and need answered for the book, that involves some tough questioning, and on the spot research--for top accurcacy. It's not like I'm taking advantage of your enthusiasm. I probably have about a hundred screen captures of messages left here, just to use for the book--along with the screen names, so I can follow up, and aknowledge those folks for the book. I go to great pains to detail out who I wish to thank for specific ideas or help. I do this because I know how important it is for you to be aknowledged, but also to appreciate your personal enthusiasm for the car. I've got hundreds of letters over the years that say "thanks, Paul, for your work on the book, etc.". How can I not honor that much appreciation?

So, I would suggest that those who wish to have daily conversations, that are off-topic, take it over to that area, or join a chat room. If you "live" on this site, want to chat, or flirt, etc.., that's fine, but don't make it appear to others that you're friendly--as long as it fit's in within your "worlds". We have to be focused on the car more, and less on personalities. Yes, I'm guilty of the chat aspect, but I now see how distracting (and time consuming) that's been.

I'll leave you with the thought that I greatly appreciate each and every one of you--and your "quest" to enjoy your GT/CS. It's your enthusuasm that got Ford to do the '07 and '08 CS. I'll work for you--in doing this book, and do the best job I can.

I'll only answer questions to owners/enthusiasts on specific threads, or through those questions sent to my private message box. I've answered about 250 messages in the past two years; many detailed and important questions. I am happy to continue that, and encourage it.

Respectfully, and with great appreciation,
(C-ya, I got a book to finish)

I think I would have to disagree with a lot of what you said Paul. I come here because it's like family-warts and all. If this site was only a clearing house for information you'd only have to check in about every two weeks or so to catch up and then what would the "new" people think of not getting answers in a timely manner? Eventually no one would bother checking in at all. Sure we get off track (often) but the questions always get answered. I can remember lots of "new" people that have written that they've lurked for a while and then decided to join because we were a fun group. I don't think either one of us can truly say with any certainty how many people look at this site and decide not to join in or why. To tell us/me/whomever to take our conversations elsewhere though I think is a little over the top. If you are unhappy and want to take your ball and go home, that's your call but I for one intend to stay and play. This will surely get me on your "bad" list but I would like you to re-read and think about what you said.

I agree! 'Just look at the "restoration referrence" section w/ the latest posts going back to Apr. May, June... Also, a whole lot of my technical assistance here was garnered silently by studying previous posts w/o asking the same redundant questions. The wealth of information is already here (and growing). Speaking of which - You (Paul) caused me to research your posts where I found until lately, you have been just as playful, detracting and often "off topic" as some of the rest of us. I also found (lately) that you never miss an opportunity to call importance to yourself. On the eve of your book - I wouldn't think you would need to do that. You speak of a "5 person or so" clique" here, then admit to a larger private mail clique of your own... I don't get it. Rarely, someone will express dis-satisfaction regarding criticism of their car on e-bay & drop out or something, but alot more have signed on (I think) because of the added variety and people.

My love for the GT/CS speaks for itself. My cars are the way I like them! So until something breaks - why should I be denied an opportunity to celebrate (w/ photos) and glorify (and somtimes tease;-) individuals here who I thoroughly enjoy communicating with? Should the consensus here lead to "strictly business" - then so be it - See ya! But I think it would be a grave mistake.

Your obsession with the GT/CS is admired, welcomed and very highly appreciated! But that isn't all there is...

I think this would be a very boring site and would not be growing like it is, if we did`nt all post what we are thinking at the time. We are just being ourselves and learning about each other. This site is like no other and it has taken on a life of its own. Owners and enthusiasts are`nt always motorheads interested in the specs of the GT/CS. They want to know what type of people we are, what we do for a living and how we present our cars. Its fun to know what we have in common and not in common. We are a family and it shows by all the support I have received since I posted my feelings about my car being in a hit and run. I know the kind words I received from everyone were not just words, but were sincere thoughts about me and my car. I knew I could come here to people I know and trust, to make me feel better. This site is not only about the cars, but it is about the owners and enthusiasts too.

Isn't that why we have an "Off Topic Lounge". Don't get me wrong, I love my GT/CS as much as anyone else but, that is one of the things I love about this site, all the different flavors it has to offer. There are those of us who may not always agree with each other but, somehow we manage to work things out. I think that's what makes this site work so well.

...True Don, but sometimes there are running comments that paralell a thread subject where it's easy just to comment right there instead of "broadcasting on one frequency and receiving on another"...

The recent NorCal gathering that Mike & Robinette hosted was a PERFECT physical manifestation of this site! You had all the "techies" whose hunger was satisfied by Paul, plus a whole lot of others who just simply enjoyed the fellowship, "faces to the names" and charming of new members to join in here. It was like everyone already knew each other! The applause & Awe every time another CS pulled in...The heartfelt goodbyes at the end... "Family reunion". How I wish all of you could've been there!

The cars are what they are - we'll always work to optimize their condition and value. The people are where it's at for me. Regulate that element too extreme and alot of CS owners will move on....

I admit, there are a select few of us who get hotheaded and go off topic to stress their point or some who just like to chat and go off topic at the slightest whim. I`m guilty of all that. I guess we should watch what we say and if it goes off topic in a major way, it would be wise to start a new thread or converse via email or personal message. I`ll try to control myself for the sake of the site. I will also admit, that I take medication for the problem of being impulsive. Only recently, I was diagnosed with having ADD. Put that in your book CalifGirl! (Apparently, she`s keeping all the information she reads on this site, about us, or maybe only me, in a little book to bring up in later posts when she gets mad. In my book, thats sick!)
See, there I go again, sorry. Maybe someone should start a new site? Or set up a live chatroom for us who are challenged in such a way. ;)
Sorry for rambling.

5 I would go for more than 15. And if you count the cars that showed up at the NorCal party a bunch more than that. (very cool photos)
I think it's safe to call us a family with at least one common interest that we all share and love. The GT/CS. Apparently some of us like to eat BBQ and hang out by the pool. If it weren't for the social element things like that just wouldn't happen. I wish I could have been at that party in more than spirit.
Without a social element how boring would this site get and how quickly would it get there? Will there be a party next year? Without the social element the answer is No.
We all have our opinions but we also value the opinions of others who share our common interests. We talk and ask about our cars as well as other things too. Someone started a very popular post "dare we post pictures of ourselves?" Does that have anything at all to do with a GT/CS? Do we always agree with each other? Hell no! Does any family or group of people?
How many folks check in, read the posts they want and zip back out during the day? I don't know but I'll bet it's a bunch. When they have a question or an issue that needs to be said they sign in and they are always welcomed. When a few have done so and then attacked someone in the family we have responded in kind. Like a family we share, smile congratulate and weep together with our common interests. Yes Rhonda, it really sucks someone hit and ran your car.
I'm just happy the rest of you are out there enjoying some of what I enjoy, having playful banter so that I can be a small part of it too.
I too have a choice in what I wish to read and make my choices freely.
Flat out, I like being here.

call me crazy - but if we opened up the Guidelines in the RESTO area to include ANY tech articles as long as they relate to a CS - then it would make Q&A time for us Newbies a bloody sight easier.
the chit chat doesnt offend me , but having to search labouriously for Tech stuff can become frustrating. The local ford site has a pretty good layout over here. http://www.fordforums.com.au/

Oh yes I am A TAD pi#$$ed off i missed the Barbecue , beer and burnt meat I LOVE IT. Throw in a couple of cars and gee that might just have been Nirvana!! and a pool as well , damn wear are my floaties !!!!

whoops i could be off topic here - better clear off

Ditto!

We do get off-topic often but that's because we are all comfortable with each other. I spend more time at this forum than others mostly due to the friendly atmosphere and helpfulness. I was welcomed to this site with open arms and was comfortable to join right in the conversation. I know I ramble at times and I apologize when that happens. But let's use the categories as they were designed and as Jason said we'll be OK I think.

I asked Jon about breaking down the categories into more detail in the past - maybe a tech section would be good as mentioned. Maybe Jon can revisit that option again. I think it's different than a restoration section.

...Well... Moderation all around I suppose. We're never going to please everybody. I'm going to disappear to "lurker" status, get out of your hair & move on to other ventures for awhile... 'Got my new Nikon SLR in the mail and the featured Mustangs will be of the flying type, turning the pylons at Reno at around 400 mph! 'Wish you all the best 'til later. God Bless!!

I hope this is only temporary. I, for one, will miss your contributions.

Ever had a family "spat" at Thanksgiving?

Well, it looks like "we" needed to clear some things up. I can't say "whom", but what sparked this was a harsh criticism from left field last week.

That, now is ancient history. Time to move on.

Like anyone else, I can't please everyone here, and instead of getting mired in more personal "stuff", I've chosen to stick with the technical things. This is a practical decision, based on the importance of the book. There is such a variety of attitudes, expectations, and personalities, that they all end up as manifestations in places like this (message boards, etc.). People "say" things on-line that they wouldn't dare say in person.

It might seem like a good idea for Jon (webmaster) to consider a chat room for those who have the desire to do that. That may be a good idea, because I know that a lot of folks find strong, supportive bonds with others here to talk, vent and get together. I just think that the two (tech and chat) tend to convolute the intended message.

I greatly appreciate your comments, whether you agree or not. A good "catharsis" once in a while is a good thing, to air out differences.

In the meantime, I've got all kinds of exciting technical stuff lined up for you!

thanks! Paul.
