Steering grind problem

As I was restoring my engine I noticed that my steering shaft sat kinda low in the collar that comes thru the firewall. It sits so low it rubs the bottom and makes a grinding noise. Anyone know if there is a way to adjust the height or angle of the steering shaft or columb? Or can you adjust the angle of the steering box. If it makes a diffrence it's manual steernig. Any help would be great. Thanks Rand

P.S. It's good to have it on the road again. I'll have some new pic's up of the completed motor in a couple of days.

On my 65 the horn wouldn't blow and I was talking to mustang dealer and he said to lossen the bolts to the steering colom and pry the colom up and that worked. I don't know if that will have anything to do with your problem.

Rand: Hard to tell exactly whats happening, but you should have a stationary steering column when it's bolted under your dash. Your steering box is also stationary, with 3 large bolts that fasten to the frame rail. You might check and make sure the rag joint is intact and replace it with its corresponding parts if needed. Someone else here have any ideas?

I put a new rag joint in. But the problem was there before. I was hoping there was some sort of adjustment under the dash, the steering box or to the plate at the firewall. Steering itself is not affected, it's just anoining to hear that crunchy sound. I know someone has the answer out there. Ask your freinds and neibors. Thanks again, Rand

I know this must really sound dumb but.... Does it sound like its hitting metal on metal? If not, maybe you have some leaves or something in there?

Yes and no, I really need to put a picture up of what it looks like. If you look under the hood where the shaft comes thru the firewall there are two sleeve like collars and the stearing shaft in the center. The shaft should be right in the middle of the collars. Mine sits low and rubs inner collar. That's where the noise comes from.

When I put my Flaming River tilt wheel in I know it didn't go exactly center but it didn't with the stock or aftermarket column.

Is it possible the frame could be slightly bent and that part of the frame is throwing everything off?

I know it's a long shot but just a thought.

No the frame is straight as an arrow. I just seems the steering column is just too low. could anyone give me a measurement from the seat to the bottom of the wheel? It seems a little tight for my legs to slide under.

I think that's a common problem. I replaced all the foam in my seats and now it's a tight fit for me and I seem to recall other people saying the same thing.

I had that problem too.

If I recall I have a 68 dealer stat book and it actually has the measurement in there. It is listed at 6 inches. I can check an actual measurement tomorrow after work if you need it.

New seats I agree could add to that.
