The Ultimate Road Trip Music

I always like Moody Blues music, and the Door's "Riders in the Storm" is good for driving your CS in the rain... Doobie Bros. is good, too.

This site has some neat mid-60's lounge music. Check out the Esquivel Music, that you can still find at Barnes & Noble, and Borders. VERY period music for your '68 vehicle!!

(this whole site is pretty cool, too)

Paul.

455 Rocket - Kathy Mattea

Hmmmm, I think I have that CD. I'll listen to it again. Also in the country theme I have added "Southbound" by Sammy Kershaw, "Speed" by Montgomery Gentry, "Carlene" by Phil Vassar, "South December Road", by Gary Morris (the country opera singer), and dozens of songs by Restless Heart, Sawyer Brown, Jo Dee Messina, and Terri Clark. Plus two or three each by Reba, David Lee Murphy, Martina, Pirates of the Mississippi, John Berry, John Anderson, Kenny Chesney, Sara Evans, Trick Pony, Tim McGraw, and Trisha Yearwood. This is going to be the ultimate road collection!

Arlie - I LIKE your choices! Don't forget "Mercury Blues" by Alan Jackson and I'd have to throw in some Garth too

Most are good songs, but calling some of them hard rock is a bit of a stretch. #12 is a personal favorite, along with "Living After Midnight". I'd forgotten all about this thread. I'm glad you brought it back up. I did buy a USB turntable and have been recording, but have been working on the "brother-in-laws" stuff as a favor when I have time. One of these days I'll be cutting you a disc and have it delivered to you in an asbestos envelope.

A couple of faves I didn't see on anyone's list:

Lunatic Fringe by Red Rider
Highway Star by Deep Purple
Suite Madame Blue by Styx (slow starter, but wait til about 2 minutes in :thumb:)
Mexican Radio by Wall of Voodoo

After all these years I've finally become a Rush fan, mainly for Neil Peart's storytelling. I found out they have some good songs once I learned how to understand Geddy Lee's language. For those of you who aren't all that familiar with Rush check out this story.

My uncle has a country place
That no one knows about.
He says it used to be a farm
Before the Motor Law.
And on Sundays I elude the Eyes,
And hop the Turbine Freight
To far outside the Wire
Where my white-haired uncle waits.

Jump to the ground
As the Turbo slows to cross the borderline.
Run like the wind
As excitement shivers up and down my spine.
Down in his barn
My uncle preserved for me an old machine
For fifty-odd years.
To keep it as new has been his dearest dream.

I strip away the old debris
That hides a shining car:
A brilliant red Barchetta
From a better vanished time.
We fire up the willing engine
Responding with a roar.
Tires spitting gravel,
I commit my weekly crime.

Wind
In my hair
Shifting and drifting
Mechanical music
Adrenaline surge...

Well-weathered leather,
Hot metal and oil,
The scented country air.
Sunlight on chrome,
The blur of the landscape,
Every nerve aware.

Suddenly ahead of me
Across the mountainside
A gleaming alloy air-car
Shoots towards me, two lanes wide.
I spin around with shrieking tires
To run the deadly race
Go screaming through the valley
As another joins the chase.

Drive like the wind
Straining the limits of machine and man.
Laughing out loud with fear and hope
I've got a desperate plan.
At the one-lane bridge
I leave the giants stranded at the riverside.
Race back to the farm
To dream with my uncle at the fireside.

How can anyone argue with that?!!!

Red Barchetta was always one of my favorites. I bought a USB turntable and have been copying music "in my spare time". I was just thinking the other day that I need to make you that disc I promised so long ago.

Who the heck is Red Barchetta? Ok...I looked him up and I must say I couldn't understand a word he was singing, you guys must understand some languages that I don't. Sounded pretty good what ever he was saying. ;-)

Yes, Geddy is a little tough to understand at first. It's probably because of that Canadian accent.

You may need to start with an easier one like, "Freewill".

I must have found the wrong Barchetta, he was singing in German...I believe. I could try for months without understanding this stuff.

Mr. Ted, the motor city madman... great tune, intro to Stranglehold was my ringtone for a while...

The Doors - LA Woman
Little Feat - Easy to Slip, Tripe Face Boogie and Fat Man in the Bathtub (the Lowell George era of the band is horribly underappreciated!)
Neil Young - Roll Another Number (for the road)
The Who - 5:15 (or all of Quadrophenia for that matter!)
