California Vehicle Code (CVC) section 10750 (a) No person shall intentionally deface, destroy, or alter the motor number, other distinguishing number, or identification mark of a vehicle required or employed for registration purposes without written authorization from the department, nor shall any person place or stamp any serial, motor, or other number or mark upon a vehicle, except one assigned thereto by the department.
(b) This section does not prohibit the restoration by an owner of the original vehicle identification number when the restoration is authorized by the department.
This is a California vehicle code, and would very in your state. Check with your department of motor vehicles, or Highway Patrol concerning laws in your states. There are only about six Felonies in our CVC, which has 42,277 seperate laws. This is one of them that can be charged as a felony. If you are restoring your GT/CS, and have supporting documents, and the damaged VIN tag, I don't see why any DMV will argue restoring or replaceing with a new tag of same #.
I hope this helps. DO NOT SWITCH VINs on cars. It is illegal, unethical, and FRAUD!!!!!! Fraud, HUMMMMMMMMMM, lets see, NOW THAT IS CRIMINAL IN ITSELF. In California, Fruad over $400.00 is a FELONY. Punishable by imprisonment in the STATE PRISON!!!!!!
SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, Don't think of doing that again.
GOOD LUCK. Mike
