That makes sense. If the breaker plate wasn't turning the timing wouldn't advance causing the car to run poor and hot. It should run at around 36* advance at 3000rpm. An adjustable timing light is a wonderful tool for such tasks.

Remove the inspection plate/gasket on the end of the door and shine a light in there.
