    Shelby signature

I think Carroll Shelby is doing a great thing for children by having people donate to his "Children's Foundation" for the privilege of receiving his signature. I think items with his signature will appreciate in value in the future, therefore, its a "win-win" situation for everyone. Russ

    Basecoat / Clearcoat

The cost of paint has skyrocketed in the past few years. Just be thankful you are not painting your car red, as this color costs the most. I used Dupont Chromabase two stage paint on my Highland green GT/CS, and it is wonderful. I also paint my Model T's with Dupont Centauri, which is a single...

    Small Block Engine Rebuilding

Casey, They do carry the 289 kit, and it is $253.44. Their website is: northernautoparts.com. I'm not sure why the difference in price, as nearly everything for the 302 is the same as a 289. Only the crank stroke and rods are different. Hope this helps, Russ

    Small Block Engine Rebuilding

I'm getting ready to start the restoration of my "project" GT/CS and will start with the 302 engine. As I was looking for components for the engine rebuild, I came across a catalog that advertised everything needed to rebuild a '68 302 engine for $199.99 with free shipping. I thought this...

    Shelby Dress Up Kit

Great original paint marks!!! It is interesting to see the colors used on the paint inspector markings. Green for the P-24 and P-30 and Red on the Paint-9....neat. My Highland green car has its inspector markings in yellow. Also, the white paint crayon number is the rotation number and is...

    Shelby Dress Up Kit

Here is a photo of the engine compartment of my 1968 GT. I installed original Shelby valve covers and a reproduction air cleaner when I restored the car. The valve covers are somewhat hard to find, but I like the way they look. These valve covers were available in 1967 from Shelby-American...

    Shelby Dress Up Kit

First of all, you CAN restore a car exactly the way it left the factory and still drive it. I do.... in fact, I took my GT/CS on a 100 mile jaunt around Lake Mary and Mormon Lake last weekend. I think the way one restores a car is personal, and shouldn't "knocked" for taking the time to get it...

    Clutch fan question.

Interestingly, there were two types of A/C compressor brackets in '68 on small block V-8's. The earlier style was a cast steel arrangement that bolted to the side of the compressor. This style required a tubular stabilizer/brace that ran from the top of the compressor to a mount on the intake...

    Clutch fan question.

Steve, I don't know what engine you have in your Mustang, but if it is a 289 or a 302 , there is no clutch on the fan. The fan is a flex fan with a long spacer that puts the fan blades about one inch from the radiator. The radiator is a 24 inch type with a shroud. Hope this helps. Russ

    I have a Theory about GT/CS production..

Paul, I think you are right that the San Jose plant scheduled days to assemble GT/CS cars, but I don't have any proof of this. It would be unreasonable to assemble a regular coupe, then a CS and then another regular coupe.....it just doesn't make good sense. I have found some interesting...

    Hood Turn Signal Rubber Grommet

Since we are talking about timing and carburetor problems, we probably should move this posting, but I had exactly the same problem with the Holly 4V on my GT. I found the problem AFTER (!) I changed the timing gears and chain, and it was the carburetor all the time. There happened to be a...

    Smog equipment on the 68's

In 1968, 289/302 engines used two types of emission control systems, called Thermactor and Imco. The Thermactor system was used on manual transmission cars, and the Imco was used on automatics. The Thermactor system burnt gases in the exhaust ports of the cylinder heads. All V-8 small block...

    '68 Wheels

Hook, I'm not sure my Mustang is a muscle car, maybe just a 302 pony car. I wanted all four wheels and tires the same size, fashioned after the Trans-Am cars of the late '60's......for a more "road-race" appearance. I especially like the wider stance these wheels produce. Russ

    '68 Wheels

Here is a wheel/tire combo that is totally retro – the wheels are original American Racing Equipped, 14 x 7, 1/2" positive offset, torque thrust wheels – tire size 235/60 x 14. I think this is a tough looking combo – The car is my newly restored 1968 GT Coupe Russ

    Hood Turn Signal Rubber Grommet

I think everyone should do what they want with their car, and HAVE FUN. I also met a fellow with a GT/CS who insisted that this grommet should be placed in the hood. His car is an MCA Medallion car, so I didn't argue with him. While I won't debate this issue with anyone, I believe the...

    Hood Turn Signal Rubber Grommet

FYI: The Electrical Assembly manual clearly shows the grommet, p/n C60B-14603-B, used in the trunk for the luggage compartment lamp. Hope this helps, Russ

    Hood Turn Signal Rubber Grommet

This post is interesting because it brings to light rumors and beliefs about what is "correct" for our cars. As I strived to be concours correct on my GT/CS, I studied various details to insure my car was as close to original as possible. I found the 1968 Mustang Assembly manuals to be...
