I bought an old steering wheel in Spokane but it has shrunk and cracked on the outer ring= the wheel and the center piece is dull and faded , needs new blue dye? Any ideas on dye supplier, I am going to try epoxy for the crack and to fill the 1" gap. Thanks , Scotty

I used a marine epoxy to repair mine and it filled the gap just fine but after a year I now have a hairline crack on one side of the repair. I used a plastic and vinyl die in a spray can that I bought from Year One to color match the repair when I was done. If you're close to Spokane, you can come by and see what mine looks like to decide if you need to send yours to a pro for restoration or not.

I understand wanting to repair. But just another option might be to cover with a vintage steering wheel cover.

Steering Wheel Repair

I restored mine a few months ago using a steering wheel repair kit from POR 15.
The kit contains everything you need to do the job, except the finish color paint/ dye.

It was a weekend project and by the time it was done it looked like a new wheel. As I recall the kit costs around $80 and you can order it from their web site:

www.por15direct.com/s.nl/sc.2/category.178/.f

Good luck!

Just to follow up on my post and regarding a steering wheel cover. In the 1996 Registry, Paul N. addresses the GT/CS Steering Wheel Cover. It states "An interesting bit of trivia is a drawing I received from ACSCO products, the manufacture of the Cal. Special script, as well as all Shelby and Cobra emblems in Los Angeles. This diagram is for the installation of a steering wheel grip intended presumably for the GT/CS, and actually was used on the '68 Cougar Dan Gurney Edition. It was assigned a Shelby part number, originating from Shelby Automotive in Livonia, Michigan, dated January 18th, 1968".

The diagram shows the same steering wheel cover as pictured in the post above. Plus, I like the feel of a thicker steering wheel.

Mine had one of those covers when I got it.
I removed it because it was a bit rough but planning on going back to that 1. to cover the cracks in my wheel and 2. because I prefer the feel like Paul said.

I have one of those covers and it is looking a little ragged. I haven't looked to see if anyone repo's them since I thought it was a late addition to cover the cracks in the steering wheel. Does anyone know of a repo for the cover?

Yeah they have them all over ... even K-Mart I've seen them at.

They have new ones that don't need to be laced but I don't think they wrap around as well. And not as fun to install either! I remember installing it on my brother's 72 Maverick Grabber ... I was about 9 at the time ... wonder how I got conned into that job. There must have been money involved.

Local cruise gives one away almost every week as part of their raffle.

As you can see by my picture, they come in many different colors. The CarQuest guys had one that was exactly the color I needed.
