Well here is a list to start the discussion

-Small vacuum cleaner
-4 microfiber towels (each different color)
-6 red rags
-Small baggy with Q tips
-Couple paint sticks
-Spray bottle with Windex and one with distilled water
-Small bottle or can of 3M Wax and Silicon Remover
-Tube of 3M yellow trim adhesive
-A couple flexible paint brushes with electrical tape wrapped around the metal band
-Spray bottle with your favorite detail spray
-Can of Never Dull
-Rattle can each of interior, engine and semi-gloss black paints
-Roll of blue masking tape
-A handful of typical hand tools

Have used a small ice chest or a plastic RV battery box in the past to carry everything neatly

Arlie, I used to take alot more than I actually needed, but with prepping the cars as much in advance, I take only a duster, bottle if Quick Detail, Windex and some rags. I bought the whole kit from McGuiar's (sp), but generally don't use it on site...

Well no wonder I seldom win a trophy. All I take is some windex, a spray bottle of water, a couple of hand towels, some tire black and chrome polish. I think I'm outgunned.

I think the others have the main idea but don't forget these:
1. Chairs
2. Water/drinks
3. Food: some events are limited on food or they are really pricey
4. Fire Extinguisher: many count off for not having one in your car and its good insurance to keep one available anyway.
5. Marti Report: gives really cool information for anyone
6. Sign: custom signs really help your car stand off
7. 1/18 scale car: I found one and the kids really love it.
8. Have fun!

Depends on the show. We load up if we are going to World of Wheels because of the special requirements. However, for most shows, we took the following:

1. Marti Report
2. Easel
3. Diecast Car
4. Picture book of restoration
5. Mustang 40 year book (to prove there really were GT/CS's
6. Kit cleaning bag - includes Windex, Final Finish, box of good paper towels, tire foam, duck tape (which is our mobile vac cleaner), touch up stray (black), touch up spray (interior), etc.
7. Lawn chairs (2 each for Zach and I)
8. Mt. Dew (2 each for Zach and I)
9. Jacket (if needed)
10. Sunscreen
11. Leave plenty of space open for a big trophy!!

Wow! Some armor all for the tires and a chair. A rag and a towel if something gets where it shouldn't be. Gosh!! Where have I been? As you can see, I would rather drive them than shine them!

Put the car on jack stands and be prepared to work from the chassie up. Pull the wheels clean inside and out. wipe down the chassie with paint thinner wear gloves ,reportory mask and googles. Have a bright halogen light to inspect your work. clean the wheels and wheel wells inside and out. clean the top of the motor and dress hoses and any faded rubber parts wax & polish air cleaner and clean under hood. clean any emission decals, stickers stricker pins and lock assemblies repaint if needed. pretaining to your engine.

Next wash the car , clay the paint polish the paint compound if need only to remove blemishes, next polish paint to a high luster and wax or glaze.

next vacuum throughtly interior move front seats forward to get any dirt between console and under seat.
shampoo upholstery and headliner. Clean dash center console dress to but wipe down to mat finish any vinyl. Polish dash gauges speedometer , tack ,clock cluster and chrome.steering wheel. Use window cleaner to clean pedels do not dress, for safety concern.
I spend 18 to 20 hours on a show detail this is what it takes to impress the judges and set your car up to sparkle from ther rest of the pack.

Not me. I wash, clean before I drive to the show. All I take is a damp terry cloth towel to wipe 'er down when I get there. Then I find a shady spot to sit down.

Thank you to everyone for your ideas and comments!

Houston's Mustang Club's big show of the season is April 4th so I thought I'd take my car just so the people of Houston can see a car most of them have never seen in person, and Jason can't make it to all the shows with his gem!

The car has rust bubbles in the door, the interior is a little tired, and some goober painted the trunk with that splatter paint, so I don't see that it's deserving of a 20 hour prep. I also don't want trophies or accolades, but I don't want to be totally embarrassed, either.

Truth be told I can't just stand and talk cars for 6 hours so prepping the car at the show appeals to me. It'll give me something to do! All of you have given me some great ideas and I think I'll survive the show without going stir crazy.

...I like to be as ready as possible when I get there. Give it a final wipe down, then go look at all the other cars... If you're there "detailing", people will still make you crazy "talkin' cars" (unique as yours is). I go for the sights, sounds & nostalgia. No trophies - no worries... Don't forget your info cards Arlie ;-)

I agree that it is very important to do the majority of the cleaning before I go. I also spend alot of time in the cockpit area and under hood as I don't want to do much cleaning on that once I get there.

However, once I do get there, I wipe the entire car down with Final Inspection. We do another clean of the windshield with windex to take off any bugs we accumlated along the way. I also had to check under the hood as bugs collect there after their demise of going through the radiator and through a fan, then deposited under the hood. Then, we lay out all of our stuff and set up the seat belts in cockpit making sure the steering wheel is straight, etc.

Lastly, we foamed all the tires and cleaned wheels. And, make a quick walk around the car to ensure we didn't miss anything in our cleaning at the garage before we left.

At World of Wheels, a totally different approach is used. Two weeks before WOW, the car went up on the rack to clean, inspect, and touch up everything underneath. It does not leave the rack until the bottom looked brand new. Once we got to the show, we did a overall clean just before the show began. As well, we took along a floor jack to index the tires so the BF Goodrich was up and T/A Radials are down. The GT hubcaps were also all facing straight up.

This all seems alittle over the top, but, we had some success in most all shows. Zach was always a great help and worked hard to prep the car and keep it in show condition throughout a show. In my opinion, and as I have judged several events, almost everyone has a nice car. What distinguishes a 2nd from a 1st place is almost always cleanliness. As a judge, I almost always approached the class I was judging that if someone was unwilling to really clean the car, they moved to the bottom of the list.

Just some random thoughts.

What do you bring to a Carshow

Sorry about that cheif!!
Got carried away, didn't read the message from the start. Well I make mistakes too!

Here's what I take in the trunk of my Ford Mustang.

1) some nice clean micro fiber towels 16/16
Mequires final inspection or simular.

2) some window cleaner for the glass and chrome.
A mild polish for freeway bugs.

3) some 303 rubber vinyl protectant and applicator.

4) history board with story about the car and sales brochure
copy of window sticker I took to kinkos to have laminated for window with two small sucktion cups to hold it on.

5) some cold water and reading material.

6) oh put some old mats on top of your good floor mats and remove at show.

7) a camera and my be a portable radio.

8) lots of patience!!

I hope that answers your question.

I also clean mine before I go but just touch up when I get there, but have my supplies with me just in case. I also take this magazine.........
Inside this addition you will find the world of information about the California Special, as I haven't found any in my area, besides that of the '68' that resides in a town some distance from me. This magizine is either found in the trunk or front seat at car shows for all to see and if there are any questions I let them read, but love telling them the story behind my GT/CS. After all it's not just any Mustang, but a California Special GT Mustang.
