Now that the weather is agreeable, I can now start the detailing of the undercarriage. Inside the wheel wells up front, there is a bunch of grime. Is this exactly that, or is this some kind of sound deadener? I have seen other cars restored that still have this crap on the splash pans. I would like to make this car perfect as I can, but I don't want to remove anything that is supposed to be there. Mike

Is this undercoating? My GT/CS didnt have it, I suspect due to it being sold in CA. But my 66 has it really thick (an Ohio car). Casey

Mine was sold at Suburban Ford in Sacramento, Ca. If it is, it is only on the inner fender wells, and firewall section of the wheel wells. It is only in symetrical spots on both sides. Thats why I can't tell if its undercoating/sound deadener, or 38 years of road grime.
All the other spots with road grime scraped right off with a gasket scraper down to the red oxide primer, where this stuff is oily. SOOOOO is it rubberized undercoating or asphault deposits? Mike

wheel well detail

Hi Mike,
According to MCA Top side may be blocked out with some sound deadner or show signs of primer. Splash guards should show signs of deadner. I did my inside fender in primer, with a clear coat they looked great but when I took it to a show I got knocked off on points because they are to be black, so I painted the iner fenders black, put sound deadner on the firewall, and inside of the wheel I just painted semi gloss black. I hope this helps. Joel

We didn't put anything back in our front wheel wells, however I have been told by my painter that we need to put something up under the fender to keep rocks from hitting the under side of the front fenders and causing paint damage. I haven't done that yet but might some day.
