1968 One of the first California Specials?

A GT/CS I found for sale in LA ended up having the VIN code 8R01C153131. As far as I know Ford started seq. number with 100000, so is this the 53,131 Mustang made? They started California Special production in mid-February so could this be one of the first GT/CS's made? Hope so .

Probably not. My car was built in February and it's 8R01C141599.

But really the math equals out. The only other thing that would effect it would be how many people ordered before the year actually started because 370/53 is about 7, which means they made more than 53,000 mustangs in 2 months. Say they started 1968 production in December 1967, it's more than 3 months until mid-February.

In the book that will not be mentioned, it appears that this car falls between 153116 and 153156. These cars were built on March 25.

This doesn't make sense.. Your car was produced on the 13th and VIN seq # is 41,000. I found a car in registry that has seq # 30,000 or so. Unless they made 2,000 cars a day at San Jose, then their statement about starting production in mid-February isn't right. Any ideas?

Who made that statement?

BTW, it appears that over 500 GT/CSs were built before that car. Do you have a Marti report?

...My oldest is 143583 built Feb 20 and it has the later (standard) side markers. I also have 153153 (close to yours) and it was March 25th...

Mine is T149485, produced March 7th with the later style side markers.

A bunch of 1531xx's are in "the book" with a 25C date... The numbers in the book are "close" but daye sfor cars close together in VIN do vary by up to a couple weeks.

Looks like "probably" middle of prodcution, if not a bit past.

130xxx-143xxx - first 200, so does not appear to be an early number. But it is not lsited in the registry so a new find.... if verified.

Mine is 143070 it was scheduled for build 02/16/68 but actually built 02/21/68 with standard marker lights. Were there some gt/cs built late due to release date of 02/18/68? often wondered?

My VIN is #8R01J139212 and was built Feb. 9 and I know there are a number built before mine.
