I have always wanted a GT/CS and I have found just a body of a California Special but not sure if its worth building back to stock. The car is 8R01C162284 I do not have a door tag so I don't know much more other than what my eyes see. From areas on the car it looks to be a lime gold with ivy gold int with a C code 289 and a standard trans "clutch petal" in the floor. Has AC vents on a standard dash, power brakes booster, Has the fiberglass trunk lid, and the standard tail light cut with the sheilds for the shebly still screwed to it also hood pin latch is on the radiator support. Thats all I know about it I am thinking of getting a Marti Report on the car but not sure if its worth it. From the VIN number it looks to be a late built car. Anyways just looking for comments so maybe it will help me make up my mind.

Sounds like a fun project! It's always good to see one come back to life.

Here are the first comments and questions that popped into my head.
Definitely get a Marti report.

Have you run an estimate of what it'll cost to fix it up?

Are there any serious rust issues?

How much of the work will you do vs. what will you have a shop do?

Are you looking to go concours, or restomod, or daily driver, or show car?

How much will the shell cost?

Are there front fenders, doors, hood, glass?

Is this the car you've been waiting for or are you getting tired of waiting?

Any car could be worth restoring if it is cheap enough and you do a lot of your own work.

If you decide you don't want to tackle the project someone else on this site might want to give it a shot.

Ok I guess I could have went into more on the body. Front fender are there but not org and they are not in the best of shape. Door skins and quarters both need replacement and also tail light panel. Pass side of floor rusted threw but can't see much more than that because hood and glass or inside of car. All Glass would have to be replace most is cracked or yellow looking. The UP side to it I found the brackets for the Marchel lights inside the car so I could build a new gril for it.

No in my backyard in Arkansas. Bought it from a friend here in the state. Is there one in NV in a junkyard?

Door data plate.

You can get a new door data plate from Marti Auto Works. Ask them when you order the Marti Report. Mike

Yes, there is a 289 GT/CS in a junk yard in Nevada. Does not have the door tag, but I know the person who removed it...but I don't know why. They told me that if someone bought the car to let them know and they would give them the door tag. He would not tell me where the car was though. Anyway, it's not your car...thought maybe I could help.

Speedy02, If you already own it, then you might as well restore it. Only special people can see a long restoration through from beginning to end and they rank pretty high in my book. There are several members here that have done just that, that I admire very much.
Alot of people would like to see these dilapitated rare cars crushed because it would make the survivors more rare, but I wish every GT/CS could be saved. Every Mustang for that matter. Give it a go, give her a chance. You`ll never be sorry you saved her.

I'd say restore it. It can't be in worse shape then the one I'm working on now and it's not even a Mustang!

Well I know it would be nice to build one from the ground up i have always wanted to do that. But I know its going to be hard to find all the parts I need to do this. I think the best thing for me to do is fix the all the sheet metal and seal it than store it in my dad's shop. That way I can pickup parts to put it all the way back together. Does anyone know around the cut off date for the last GT/CS is??? With the vin being a 62284 I would think its a pretty late car.

Mine is 162217 and the build date was May 15th 1968. You really should get a Marti report for your own peace of mind.

Hey Speedy: I agree with the others here, restore her if you are able. Take your time. You've already thought of a good starting point, fix the metal cancer, seal and store. After that, when time and $ allow, start the resurrection process. I guarantee you'll enjoy the process from beginning to end and in the end, you'll have something to be proud of and admired by many

Does it look worse than this??

Restore it!! It is worth all the hard work. As you can plainly see, my measuring stick for restoring vs scraping is alittle bent in one direction.

We did almost all the work ourselves with the exception of actually painting the car and building the motor. Therefore, our time is not included. End number for parts, paint, etc would be in the neighborhood of 30K.

That's pretty good. I would have thought a lot more. The labor bill could have doubled it I'd guess.
