What's the purpose of this threaded boss under the freeze plug?

Here's another issue I found yesterday (not my car). It looks like the there is enough of the manifold under the bolt to work. What do you think?

That is just a blind hole on my 289 C code block. No bolt or plug.

Jon,
Do you happen to have a similar photo of the other side of the engine? I'd love to see how both sides compare.

Thanks

Interesting. It looks like Ford made a few changes to the block in ‘66.

When did they get rid of the PCV pipe that vented to atmosphere? Could the bolt hole be to hold the bottom of the pipe?

On our ''66 there is a stud threaded into the block that mounts the little heater "box" that supplies hot (warm) air to the air cleaner in cold weather. I can't tell for sure if that's the exact location, but it's close.

Where are the block drains? Are they the treaded plugs at the rear of the engine on the driver side, and front of the engine on the passenger side?
